Rotary Club of Saginaw

Rotary Club of Saginaw The Rotary Club of Saginaw was founded in 1914. It meets at noon Wednesdays at The Saginaw Club, 219 N. Washington, and on Zoom. Our current membership is 44.

In July and fifth Wednesdays it meets at offsite locations. Rotary Club of Saginaw was founded in 1914; the third Rotary club chartered in Michigan and the 93rd in the world. Today there are 35,000 Rotary clubs worldwide. In our more than 100 years of existence we have helped fund projects in Chile, South Korea, Brazil, India, Haiti, Japan and the Dominican Republic as well as numerous initiative

s in our own town. Literacy, clean water, eliminating polio and the environment are four of our primary focuses. In 1924 we founded Camp Rotary, an 1100 acre property in northern Michigan with a spring-fed lake. We still own the property and lease its management to the Boy Scouts of America.

Yesterday a group of us toured the new ice cream shop on Hamilton St in Saginaw; Michigan Cream and Sugar. It was amazing, & the ice cream cold & delicious! They use Michigan sourced ingredients (milk from Michigan Milk Producers Assoc. & Pioneer Sugar), nothing artificial, no emulsifiers, & all ice cream is made in house, nothing pre-made & shipped in. They are dedicated to offering a high quality ice cream & some sorbets. It is a 3 day process to make a batch of all natural ice cream. My fav was the Strawberry Lemonade! Oh & that bubble cone (w/orange pineapple), so good!๐Ÿฆ๐Ÿจ Stop in & check them out. Michigan Cream & Sugar Ice Cream Company

Yesterday the three Saginaw Rotary Clubs, including ours, joined together at the CMU College of Medicine to celebrate our newest Thanks For Staying Rotary Scholarship winner, Dr. Sydney Pauls!

In 2017 the 3 clubs joined together to form the Thanks for Staying Rotary Scholarship Endowment. Annually we fundraise to build the endowment, which currently sits at just under $300k! Our hope is to one day grow it to a point where more than one scholarship can be awarded annually.

This is a $10,000 scholarship (to be applied to student loans), to a medical student who Stays in this area to do their residency program. Studies show that these doctors typically tend to stay within 50 miles of where they complete their residency.

Todate the Endowment has paid out $90,000 in scholarships! The average indebtedness of a medical student is $250k.

The majority of these scholarship winners are in needed fields of psychiatry, family medicine, & OBGYN care. Many are serving in rural & underserved areas here in Michigan. The college has a very high retention rate of 50% of graduates staying here in Michigan to practice medicine.

The CMU College of Medicine has state of the art SIM labs, and are hailed as some of the best in the country. There are only about 170 rural type medical colleges across the country & the CMU College of Medicine ranks 17th, nationally! Must be why they had appx. 8,000 applicants for the 104 student openings this year. The majority of students filling the openings are from Michigan. This year's recipient is from West Bloomfield.

Dr. Pauls graduated with a 3.9gpa, is passionate about doing research in surgical outcomes & hopes to one day do residency education.

Congrats to Dr. Sydney Pauls on being this year's Thanks for Staying Rotary Scholarship recipient! Special thanks to Dr. Steven Vance for his vision from the beginning & hard work educating our future doctors!

If you would like to donate, just visit the CMU website, giving area & search for the Thanks for Staying Rotary Scholarship.

Recently we had the pleasure to hear from our outbound Rotary Youth Exchange Student, Hunter Wiktorowski, upon his return from Baden-Wลฑrttemberg, Germany after 1 year of living abroad!

Hunter told us about all of his travels throughout Europe (one of his favorite aspects), using their train system to get around (it was always late but he felt safe), his schooling while there (attending language camps & gymnasium-a college prep school), & his favorite time of year in Germany - Christmas (yes, they do put lit candles on their Christmas trees!)

He said his favorite country to visit, besides Germany, was Switzerland as it was clean, beautiful & very friendly. His least favorite was France, felt it was underwhelming, dirty & not very friendly. Hunter indicated Germany is very welcoming & generally loves Americans, and he indicated Hungary was the friendliest country he visited.

Hunter loved this experience provided by our Rotary club, and the Rotarians who helped him in Germany. His ultimate goal is to reside in Europe permanently.

Congrats to you, Hunter, on this great experience & blessings to you on your future endeavors.

Photos of his trip were provided by Hunter. Rotary photos provided by member, Stephanie Reinhardt.
