The Rotary Club of Saginaw was founded in 1914. It meets at noon Wednesdays at The Saginaw Club, 219 N. Washington, and on Zoom. Our current membership is 44.

In July and fifth Wednesdays it meets at offsite locations. Rotary Club of Saginaw was founded in 1914; the third Rotary club chartered in Michigan and the 93rd in the world. Today there are 35,000 Rotary clubs worldwide. In our more than 100 years of existence we have helped fund projects in Chile, South Korea, Brazil, India, Haiti, Japan and the Dominican Republic as well as numerous initiatives in our own town. Literacy, clean water, eliminating polio and the environment are four of our primary focuses. In 1924 we founded Camp Rotary, an 1100 acre property in northern Michigan with a spring-fed lake. We still own the property and lease its management to the Boy Scouts of America.

So this surprise happened... Some members of our Downtown Rotary Club attended the Saginaw Community Foundation Annual Celebration & award event last night, at SVSU's Curtiss Hall. We were one of two finalist for a $40k Community Improvement Grant toward our $700k renovation project of Crayola Park (Fordney St). We lost to the Buena Vista Community Center proposal (also a worthy cause). This was the last agenda item, & although happy for them, & trying to put on a happy face, we were sad.

Then a group of young people representing the FORCE Youth Advisory Council rushed up on the stage with a surprise announcement. They want to help save their favorite childhood park & in a rare exception, also granted us $40k! We were totally shocked & yes a few tears were shed. We are getting closer & closer to raising the needed funds, & this was an awesome heartfelt give by these amazing young people!

Our Saginaw Community Foundation does amazing work in Saginaw County giving millions in grants & scholarships to others. THANK YOU SCF, 100x over! Here are some photos from last night. Saginaw Community Foundation

I would like to give a huge shout out to one of our Rotary members, Tyler DuRussel, for completing a grueling 240-mile foot race called Tridge2Bridge240 this past week/weekend. He started at the Tridge in Midland on Tuesday and would end up at the base of the Mackinaw Bridge by noon on Sunday; within 125 hours from starting, as the rules state, following the Lake Huron coastline, US23. This is a huge accomplishment, grueling and painful, that takes a strong mind, a lot of planning for challenges along the way and a huge will to overcome many obstacles, including the recent heatwave. True perseverance! It is an unsupported, ultra-marathon, wherein runners are not permitted to enter automobiles and must navigate the open course on foot, sometimes resting or sleeping alongside the roadway. For those that know Rotarian, Christian Valasquez, his daughter, Isabel, also ran this race and she and Tyler ran a good portion of it together, supporting and pushing one another, as Tyler said: "...just put one foot in front of the other. That's all there is to it." Wow! Congrats to Tyler and Isabel on this huge accomplishment, now rest, heal up and enjoy your families! We are very proud of you...

We have had some awesome speakers as of late & tomorrow will be special as we hear from Saginaw's Mayor, Brenda Moore! Public is welcome to join us for our weekly meeting, at noon at the Saginaw Club, 219 N Washington, (2nd floor, use sm side entrance on the front of the building.) Only charge is if you decide to order lunch. Always great choices on our lunch menu!
