Calling all house architects—cookie house architects, that is! Sign up today to show off your house-making skills! The competition isn’t until November, so you have plenty of time to gather your crew, dream up a design, and bring it to life. No hard hats required, but be safe around the kitchen and don’t eat too much frosting. We don’t want you getting "frosted" before the judging even begins!

"I’ve been with the city for 21 years, most of them as a City Engineer. I’m a professional engineer, licensed in the state of Michigan. Several years ago, I became the Public Works director.

The City used to have its own Parks and Recreation division, but due to budget concerns in the early 2000s, the division was eliminated. Today, we’re down to a fraction of what that operating budget was.

To help fill in the gaps, people have formed organizations to help take care of the parks. For example, Friends of Hoyt Park adopted the park and is an officially recognized organization. That allows them to raise funds to care for the park and provide programming. Over the years, they’ve spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to improve not only the ball fields but the facility itself.

They oversee annual events like ice skating in the winter and the baseball and softball program in the summer.

Hoyt Park is still city-owned property, but they work with us through an agreement called the Adopt a Park program."

- Phil Karwat, Director of Public Works

Details on how the Adopt a Park program works tomorrow!
