DID YOU KNOW NEEDING TO BE IN CONTROL CAN BECOME A HANG-UP?

Sometimes control doesn’t look like controlling other people.

Sometimes it looks like needing to know what’s going to happen next.

Replaying every possible outcome.

Trying to prevent anything from going wrong.

Feeling anxious when plans change.

Or believing everything will fall apart if we aren’t the one holding it all together.

But recovery teaches us something different…

We can be responsible without trying to be in control.

There are things we can change… and there are things we have to surrender.

Sometimes the next step in our recovery is opening our hands and saying…

“God, I trust You with what I cannot control.”

“Be still, and know that I am God.”
Psalm 46:10

Blessed in Trust

Jeremiah 17 begins with a rebuke. God is calling out the Israelites for their idolatry—for trusting in other gods and forsaking Him and His teachings.

Like a parent with a child who's made a terrible choice, God makes it very clear that these choices have led and will lead to consequences. And yet, rather than only focusing on all that's been lost and will be lost because of Israel’s terrible choices, Jeremiah takes a moment to bring a refreshing reminder:

“But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in Him.”
Jeremiah 17:7 NIV

He calls those who trust Him “blessed,” even as chaos, sin, and idolatry reign around them. He says that people who trust in God “will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.” (Jeremiah 17:8 NIV)

We get to choose who and what we worship.

Who is your confidence in? Who do you trust? If you're trusting in the Lord, take heart knowing that in this you are blessed. An abundant life in God, full of fruit even when sin is all around, is the mark of having chosen to trust Him. What an incredible thing it is to be able to make this choice!

DID YOU KNOW STEP 10 HELPS US CATCH THINGS BEFORE THEY BECOME BIGGER PROBLEMS?

“Continue to take personal inventory and when we were wrong, promptly admitted it.”

Recovery isn’t about never getting it wrong again.

We’re still going to have moments when we react instead of respond.
We’re going to say things we shouldn’t.
Old habits and attitudes may try to creep back in.
Pride, resentment, fear, anger, or control can show up before we even realize it.

That’s why Step 10 matters.

Instead of letting something sit for days, weeks, or months… we deal with it.

We ask ourselves:
Where was I wrong?
What do I need to own?
Is there an apology I need to make?
Is there something I need to bring to God instead of carrying it?

Step 10 teaches us that admitting we were wrong isn’t weakness.

It’s growth.

We don’t have to be perfect to keep moving forward… we just have to stay honest and willing to make things right.

“Therefore, let us examine our ways and test them, and let us return to the LORD.”
Lamentations 3:40

DID YOU KNOW WE CAN PLACE OUR IDENTITY IN THINGS THAT WERE NEVER MEANT TO DEFINE US?

Success.
Our job.
Our marriage.
Our children.
Our appearance.
Our reputation.
Our possessions.
Being needed.
Even being the person who always has it all together.

The problem is… what happens when one of those things changes?

When the job is gone.
When the relationship ends.
When we fail.
When people are disappointed in us.
When we’re no longer needed like we once were.

If our identity is built on something that can change, we can lose ourselves when it does.

Recovery teaches us to ask a deeper question…

Who am I when you take all of those things away?

Our identity was never meant to rest in what we accomplish, what we own, what people think of us, or what role we fill.

Our identity is found in Christ.

Everything else may change…

but who God says we are does not.

“For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.” Colossians 3:3
