“Ignoring mental illness doesn’t make it go away. A lot of people who have mental illnesses are treated like a problem or infantilized their whole lives, and aren’t taught a lot of life skills they need as adults when they’re growing up, so when they become adults, the skills their peers already learned are lost on them, and mentally ill people are thrown in the deep end. I got lucky in that my parents can help support me while I try to learn, but not everyone has that. Clubhouse is a place that helps people learn the skills we need to be independent, while getting the support we need in the meantime, and provides a sense of security and community. Being mentally ill can be lonely, and being around others who have similar experiences as us can really make a difference. Between a social network, the training, and resources, clubhouse provides, this program is a great place!”
