🕯️Who was Matthew Shepard?

Described by friends and family as kind and easy to talk to, Matthew Shepard was a college student and victim of one of the most notorious anti-gay hate crimes in American history. His memorial service garnered immense national and international media attention, which brought Matt’s story to the forefront of the fight against bigotry and hate. Just over a decade later (in 2009), the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act—a federal law against bias crimes directed at le***an, gay, bis*xual, or transgender people—was passed.

The life and death of Matthew Shepard changed the way we talk about, and deal with, anti-LGBTQ+ hate in the United States. Since his death, Matt’s legacy has challenged and inspired millions of individuals to replace hate with understanding, compassion, and acceptance.

Today we remember Matthew Shepard, and share gratitude for our friends at Matthew Shepard Foundation, who continue to do such critical work in his honor.

Matthew, you are gone but never forgotten. 🕯🌈

National PrEP Day | October 10

Today, The Hearth Home recognizes National PrEP Day, an opportunity to raise awareness about pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and its important role in HIV prevention.

Established in 2025, National PrEP Day highlights the importance of expanding access to PrEP, addressing barriers to prevention services, and encouraging individuals to make informed decisions about their s*xual health.

When taken as prescribed, PrEP can reduce the risk of acquiring HIV through s*x by approximately 99%. With daily oral medications and long-acting injectable options available, individuals have more choices than ever when considering HIV prevention.

At The Hearth Home, we are committed to making HIV prevention services accessible to our communities. Whether you are interested in starting PrEP, exploring different prevention options, or reconnecting with PrEP services, our team is available to provide education, navigation, and assistance accessing care.

We also offer free, confidential HIV testing and additional HIV prevention resources to help individuals stay informed about their health.

The Hearth Home is open Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM, and we welcome anyone interested in learning more about PrEP and the services available through Great Lakes Bay Health Centers.

HIV prevention is not one-size-fits-all. We are here to help you explore the options that work best for you.
