The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution is dedicated to historical preservation, promotion of education, and patriotism.

The DAR, founded in 1890 and headquartered in Washington, D.C., is a non-profit, non-political volunteer women's service organization dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving American history, and securing America's future through better education for children. State DAR officers gathered together for the formation of the
Gila Valley Chapter, NSDAR on April 12, 2014 in Safford, AZ. During the official meeting, members took the oath of membership, officers were installed, and gifts were exchanged. Members of the new chapter presented the visiting state officers with a local favorite - salsa. One of those officers quipped that the Safford group would be remembered as the "Hot Stuff Chapter!"

The Gila Valley DAR Chapter loves a parade.... any excuse to show our patriotic spirit! Today three vehicles were used in our Graham County Fair parade, celebrating 100 years!

A very heartwarming project was successfully completed! The VFW Auxiliary #10385 hosted a Project Linus sew day in July along with the Gila Valley DAR, Southeast AZ Sew and Sews, and community quilters from the EAC quilting classes. Our goal was to help the Project Linus Snowball Express project to give children of fallen military and first responders a quilt when they went on their trip to Disney World with Gary Sinise. Jackie Hale, the Project Linus coordinator for our area, committed to 30 quilts and we made 40! A special thank you to Lynnae Merrell of Cotton Blossom Quilts for cutting and making quilt kits to hand out, and to our local longarm quilters Natalie Barron, Leslie Bingham and Cindy Bryce for donating their services. This was such a rewarding community project, and it is true, many hands make light work!!

We had a great turn out for our Constitution Week program. The Graham County Superior Court Judge, Michael Peterson, was the keynote speaker, reminding us that
The Constitution is more important than ever. A men’s trio provided two patriotic musical numbers, and our patriotic essay winners were introduced. Thank you to the community for supporting the DAR.

For our Day of Service, the Gila Valley DAR Chapter surprised our hard working fire departments with treats for their monthly training meetings. A special thank you to the Pima, Safford and Thatcher Fire Departments for your service to the Gila Valley!

Our chapter participated in the Gila Valley America 250 parade. The theme of the float was Past…Present… Future. A special thank you to Louise Edwards and Darlene Moore for spearheading our float.

Thatcher VFW Post #10385 is hosting a Project Linus Sew day in conjunction with GV DAR and SE AZ Sew & Sews. It will be t his Saturday, July 18th, from 9 to 3 pm. Some kits will be available, and ready to go, crocheters are needed for edging on fleece throws, pressers, etc. Feel free to bring your own fabric/project to work on for this great cause. These quilts will be given to the children of fallen military, first responders, and law enforcement. All skill levels are welcome. The kitchen will be open for lunch purchases.
