Susan Zabransky Hughes Memorial Run

Susan Zabransky Hughes Memorial Run USATF Certified 5k and Grand Prix Sanctioned Memorial Run held in Saddle River, New Jersey. Sanzari Children’s Hospital at HackensackUMC.

A 5k Run/Walk to honor Susan Zabransky Hughes, who succumbed to cervical cancer in July 2011 at the age of 46. Over the past ten years, we have raised funds to accomplish great things! We began by building “Susan's Suite", a 10-bed oncology suite dedicated to treatment for all cancer patients in the Emergency & Trauma Center at Hackensack University Medical Center. Upon completion of our first goa

l, we focused on new endeavors, which included funding 2 weeks of camp every summer at Pony Power Therapies for patients treated at Joseph M. The equine therapy program offers pediatric patients and their families opportunities to engage in activities related to horses and the farm. The committee also created the Susan Zabransky Hughes Memorial Scholarship and awarded 2 scholars in the School of Medicine’s inaugural class who demonstrated a record of dedicated academic achievement, along with the promise of an exemplary career in medicine. Our most recent project involves building a “Teen Lounge” for oncology patients at the Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital at Hackensack University Medical Center in memory of Saddle River resident, Kyle Egan, who passed away in November 2019 at age 17 from
Osteosarcoma. A Teen Lounge will allow patients undergoing treatment, a space where they can find some enjoyment outside of their hospital rooms. This room will provide video games, arts & crafts, snacks and socializing and are things that kids in hospitals need very much.

We are so proud of all that the Saddle River, Susan Zabransky Hughes 5K has accomplished over the past 15 years.

Our partnership with Hackensack University Medical Center helped us reach our first goal—funding an emergency room dedicated to cancer patients in memory of Susan Zabransky Hughes, who tragically passed away from cervical cancer at just 41.

But we didn’t stop there.

A Saddle River resident, Kyle, was a sophomore in high school when he began a battle with a rare cancer diagnosis of osteosarcoma. It opened our eyes to something more—a need for a space just for teens. A place inside the hospital where they could step away from their rooms, play video games, connect, and simply be kids alongside others facing similar challenges. While Kyle, who sadly passed away at age 17 from osteosarcoma in 2019, didn’t get the chance to see or enjoy this vision, a dedicated teen space was created in his honor through the funds raised by this incredible community.

And the mission continues.

Research is critical in the fight to cure cancer. This year, proceeds will once again benefit cervical cancer research taking place at the Hackensack Meridian Center for Discovery and Innovation (CDI), an advanced research institution founded by Hackensack Meridian Health to rapidly translate innovations in biomedical science to improve human health. CDI's cervical cancer research program is dedicated to the development of new diagnostic technologies for early detection and improved treatment for women with cervical cancers.

I hope this inspires you to be part of something truly meaningful. Please consider signing up for the 15th Annual Saddle River 5K—your participation and donation make a real difference.
