Black Child Legacy Campaign - RAACD

Black Child Legacy Campaign - RAACD Reduction of African American Child Deaths (RAACD) a campaign to decrease the deaths of African American children in Sacramento, CA.

In Sacramento County, African American children die at twice the rate of any other ethnicity. The top four causes of death are low birth weight, premature birth and other conditions in babies under one year old (perinatal conditions), infant sleep-related deaths, child abuse and neglect and gun violence or homicide from someone other than a family member (third-party homicide). These deaths are pr

eventable. The Black Child Legacy Campaign is the community-driven movement established by the Steering Committee on Reduction of African American Child Deaths, which is working to reduce deaths of African American children by 10% to 20% by 2020 in Sacramento County. The Steering Committee is funded by the County of Sacramento, City of Sacramento and First 5 Sacramento and is managed by The Center. Learn more at www.blackchildlegacy.org

The Black Child Legacy Campaign (BCLC) is growing. We are proud to welcome Project Optimism as our eighth Community Incubator Lead, expanding our work to Rancho Cordova. Black children in Rancho face several risk factors and high rates of death, making it an area of critical opportunity for BCLC’s culturally rooted, trauma‑informed work. Project Optimism brings deep relationships, mentorship-centered support and a commitment to uplifting Black children and families. Their new Optimism in Action Coalition will help drive local change and strengthen community voice.

Our legacy continues. Our communities lead. Our children deserve to thrive.

Valley Hi, home to the southernmost Black Child Legacy Campaign (BCLC) hub, is a community burdened by food deserts, housing scarcity and economic challenges. Local organizations like South Sacramento Christian Center have stepped into the gap to sustain the community with vital services. For over 25 years now, South Sacramento Christian Center has run a weekly food distribution program that provides hundreds of families with fresh groceries.
“We continue to work with our families on different levels, from giving them diapers, to giving them food, to connecting them with resources [...] If you need a job, we can get you a job, if you need housing, we try to get you housing.” - Nannette West, South Sacramento Christian Team Member, Valley Hi
As a Community Incubator Lead for our BCLC work, South Sacramento Christian Center also provides violence prevention and intervention services, youth mentorship services and more. Staffed and led by Valley Hi natives, South Sacramento Christian Center is for the community, by the community.
“Black kids deserve to dream without limits and not be defined by their circumstances, their environment, or their trauma.” - Jermisha King, BCLC Sacramento County Department of Human Assistance Partner, Valley Hi

March with purpose this MLK Day: Join us on Monday, January 19 at 8 AM in the West Lot (Sutterville entrance, across from Hughes Stadium) as we honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s profound legacy.
We’ll join thousands on the “March for the Dream” — a 6-mile journey from Sacramento City College through downtown to the SAFE Credit Union Convention Center. En route, you’ll encounter uplifting community performances and move in solidarity through Sacramento’s streets.
Post-march, the Diversity Expo (10 AM–2 PM) offers enriching resources: from career and education booths to health screenings, live entertainment, and the launch of “Journey to Justice,” a new year-round civic initiative.
Getting there & back is easy with SacRT’s free rides on Jan 19 (7 AM–3 PM), and free shuttle service after the march.
I encourage you to invite someone outside your usual network—share a meaningful “King-Talk” as we walk together. Let’s reflect, connect, and commit to equity and justice in action.
