TWO SACRAMENTO STORIES. TWO DIFFERENT JOURNEYS. ONE CITY. 💯🏀🌉

Last night I had the opportunity to meet with Sacramento’s own Matt Barnes — a man who went from Del Campo High School to UCLA, built a 14-year career in the NBA, wore the purple and gold of the Los Angeles Lakers, represented the Sacramento Kings, and ultimately became an NBA Champion.

But this picture is bigger than basketball.

Because when two men who came from Sacramento, traveled two completely different roads, and both understand what it means to fight their way forward sit down at the same table — the conversation hits different.

Matt reached the highest level of professional basketball.

My road took me through more than two decades of incarceration before I came home determined to turn everything I survived into something that could help prevent the next generation from ever taking that road.

Different journeys.

Same Sacramento.

And last night, we talked about something bigger than either one of us:

our young people. our communities. our city.

Through The Public Bridge, I’ve been building opportunities that put Sacramento youth in rooms, institutions, colleges, experiences, and conversations that can change the direction of their lives.

Matt has a platform, a journey, and a connection to this city that speaks for itself.

What happens from here, time will tell.

But I walked away from our conversation believing one thing:

Sacramento has produced some powerful people. Imagine what happens when we stop building separately and start building together.

This wasn’t about getting a picture with a former NBA player.

It was about two Sacramento men recognizing that our greatest legacy may not be what we accomplished individually — but what we help the generation behind us accomplish together.

Much respect, Matt. 🤝

The conversation started.

Now let’s see what Sacramento can build from it.

THIS is what transformation looks like. 🎓🔥

Slide one is a young person who made a decision to complete the process.

Slide two tells the bigger story — a youth, a mother, and a community celebrating what happens when a family refuses to give up.

Completing The Public Bridge’s Eight-Week Transformational Process™ isn’t just about receiving a certificate. It represents eight weeks of showing up, being challenged, having difficult conversations, learning accountability, building self-control, and being exposed to possibilities beyond the streets.

And behind so many young people who cross that finish line is a parent who kept pushing, kept believing, and kept showing up. ❤️

This graduation belongs to BOTH of them.

At The Public Bridge, we’re not waiting until a young person enters the justice system to ask what went wrong. We’re building the bridge BEFORE they get there.

One youth.
One family.
One transformation at a time.

🎓 Congratulations on completing the Eight-Week Transformational Process™. Your certificate represents what you finished — but your future will represent what you do next.

The process doesn’t end at graduation. This is where the next chapter begins.

🚨 PARENTS. FAMILIES. SACRAMENTO. I NEED YOUR ATTENTION. 🚨

I’m standing in front of this camera because I don’t want another young person to miss an opportunity that could change the direction of their life.

REGISTRATION IS OPEN for The Public Bridge programs.

This isn’t about waiting until a young person gets suspended, arrested, expelled, or caught up in something they can’t take back.

This is about reaching them BEFORE.

The Public Bridge is giving youth something bigger than a conversation. We’re creating EXPOSURE. EXPERIENCE. ACCOUNTABILITY. MENTORSHIP. AND OPPORTUNITY.

Our youth participate in transformational programming designed to challenge the way they think, strengthen decision-making, expose them to new environments, and help them understand that one decision can change everything — but so can one opportunity.

Parents, I’m asking you personally:

Don’t wait for the system to introduce itself to your child. Introduce your child to a different future FIRST.

If you have a son, daughter, nephew, niece, grandchild, student, or young person who needs direction, structure, mentorship, exposure—or simply deserves another positive influence in their corner—

🎓 THE CERTIFICATES TELL THE STORY — BUT THE PEOPLE MADE IT POSSIBLE.

Every certificate in that first picture represents more than completing a program.

It represents showing up. Staying committed. Being challenged. Making better choices. And finishing what you started.

Then…

The video of me kneeling in front of everyone is bigger than a crowd. Those are youth, parents, families, mentors, volunteers, and community members who came together because they believe transformation is possible.

There was a time when The Public Bridge was only an idea — a vision written from inside prison walls. Today, that vision has faces. It has families. It has graduates. It has a community standing behind it.

Our 8-Week Transformational Process was never designed to simply hand young people certificates.

It was designed to give them exposure, accountability, mentorship, difficult conversations, new environments, and an opportunity to see beyond the decisions in front of them today.

And what makes this even more powerful is this:

The Public Bridge is the only program in Sacramento where youth, parents, and even judges graduate in the same cohort.

Because real transformation doesn’t happen in isolation — it happens when everyone connected to the process is willing to grow together, be held accountable together, and heal together.

And when I looked across that room and saw everybody standing there, I understood something:

We are no longer talking about what The Public Bridge could become.
We are witnessing what it IS becoming.

To every graduating participant: YOU EARNED THIS. 🏆
To every parent who stayed committed: YOU ARE PART OF THIS VICTORY.
To every judge who chose to engage differently, to every volunteer, mentor, supporter, and community partner: YOU HELPED BUILD THIS BRIDGE.

This is what community intervention looks like when the community actually shows up.

And we’re just getting started.

🚨 PARENTS — REGISTRATION IS OPEN. AND THIS MESSAGE IS FOR YOU.

I’m standing in an empty classroom right now because the next group of young people who fill these seats could be YOUR children.

The Public Bridge is now accepting youth registrations for transformational experiences including:

🏛️ Folsom State Prison Youth Diversion Tours
👧🏽 CCWF — California’s women’s prison experiences for girls
🎓 Sacramento State University Tours
🤝 Mentorship, education, accountability & transformation

But parents, I NEED YOUR HELP.

Registration is only the beginning.

We need you to make sure your young person shows up, stays committed, and completes the process.

School has started. Sports have started. Practices, games and activities are filling up the calendar. And I absolutely want our young people to succeed academically and athletically.

But if you already know your child is making decisions that could jeopardize their future, we cannot pretend a jersey, a starting position or a good season will automatically correct the behavior.

Sometimes parenting means making the difficult decision to temporarily rearrange priorities so your child can develop the judgment necessary to protect everything they’re working toward.

Because what good is an athletic career if incarceration interrupts it?

What good is talent if one decision takes away the opportunity to use it?

We aren’t trying to take young people away from their dreams.

We’re trying to make sure they live long enough, stay free enough, and become disciplined enough to reach them.

Let them see both sides.

Let them walk onto a college campus and see possibility.

Let them walk through a correctional institution and understand consequences.

Then surround them with people who will help them process what they experienced and challenge the decisions they’re making TODAY.

Parents, don’t wait until the court system becomes the intervention.

INTERVENE WHILE YOU STILL HAVE OPTIONS.

THIS MOMENT IS BIGGER THAN A CERTIFICATE. 🎓🌉

In the first slide, it’s me standing beside a young man who completed The Public Bridge’s Eight-Week Transformational Process™.

In the second slide, his mother joins us—and that picture tells an even deeper story.

Because behind many young people who keep pushing forward is a parent who refused to stop showing up.

This young man completed the journey, but his mother stood beside him through the process. That certificate represents commitment, accountability, growth, exposure, and a family determined to keep moving forward.

I spent over two decades incarcerated, so I understand where certain decisions can lead. Today, I get the opportunity to stand beside young people before those decisions become consequences they can’t take back.

That’s why this picture means something different to me.

One young man. One committed mother. One completed journey. And an entire future still waiting to be written.

Congratulations, young king. 👑🎓
And congratulations to Mom for standing beside him.

This one is special. đź’Ż

This young man completed The Public Bridge’s Eight-Week Transformational Process, but his story goes far beyond a certificate.

His older brother is currently incarcerated, facing a long-term sentence. His father has walked through his own challenges in life—and instead of allowing that past to define what comes next, he has turned those experiences into lessons for his son.

His father is present. He is hands-on. He is mentoring his son with the wisdom that can only come from knowing where certain roads can lead. And beside them is a mother who continues to stand strong and invest in her child’s future.

That is what breaking cycles can look like.

A young man does not have to repeat the story of the generation before him. He can learn from it. He can build from it. He can write something completely different.

Today, we aren’t looking at where this young man could have ended up.

We’re looking at where he is GOING. 🎓💯

Congratulations, young king. Keep choosing your future.

THIS is what community investment looks like. 💯🌉

These pictures represent more than certificates.

In the first photo, I’m standing beside a young man holding his Public Bridge Course Completion Certificate—proof that he showed up, stayed committed, and completed the process.

In the next, I’m standing alongside him and his mother—the family behind the accomplishment.

In this picture, his mother is holding her Parent of the Year Certificate, because transformation doesn’t happen with the youth alone. It takes parents who are willing to show up, sacrifice their time, participate in the process, and walk beside their children.

They didn’t just sign up for a program. They invested in themselves and in each other.

This is what The Public Bridge is building: youth, parents, mentors, and community members working together to create alternatives to the streets before the streets make decisions for our young people.

Real change is going to require dedicated families and committed community members just like this.

We can’t keep asking, “Who is going to save our youth?”

WE ARE. Together.

Congratulations to this young man and his mother. Your commitment deserves to be recognized, and your example deserves to be seen.
