Family Business Association of California

Family Business Association of California The purpose of the Family Business Association is to advance, protect and perpetuate family businesses through representation at the Capitol.

Why we need the Family Business Association of California:
Family businesses generate 57% of the nation’s GDP, employ 63% of the workforce and create 75% of all new jobs. California’s 1.4 million family businesses employ 7 million Californians. Family businesses are the backbone of the economy, nationally and in California. There are organizations through California that assist with many aspects o

f family business, but there has been no representation of all family businesses at the State Capitol. There has been no organization to put forth legislative initiatives on behalf of family businesses and no one to fight against bad legislation or regulations that would harm family businesses. FBA is a forceful voice for family businesses. California is losing businesses to other states every day, and there must be some incentives created to keep the control of a business in the family and keep the family business in California. FBA defines a Family Business as follows:
Ownership control of a privately held enterprise by members of a family or partnership of families
Strategic influence by family members on the management of the firm, whether by being active in management, by continuing to shape the culture, and/or by serving as board members or advisors
The desire for continuity and succession across generations

In one case highlighted in our latest op-ed, a business waited more than 370 days for a permit to install a security fence. In one city it took five years. During that delay, a criminal trespasser burned down a truck dealership, putting 24 people out of work overnight. Stories like this show why California needs to review outdated and excessive regulations.

Family businesses employ millions of Californians and support communities across the state. But many are struggling under an increasingly complex regulatory system. A new report from the Public Policy Institute of California found that California businesses must comply with more than 420,000 regulatory constraints — nearly three times the national median. Our latest op-ed explains why this matters.

reform in 2024 has helped CA to a degree, but more needs to be done to prevent trial lawyers from filing lucrative lawsuits alleging violations of California labor law that businesses are usually forced to settle. The lawyers make off with substantial fees, employees receive little, and businesses pay the price. Our chairman, Ken Monroe, has some suggestions in an op-ed in the Sacramento Business Journal. Check out our blog for more.

The Sacramento Business Journal has posted an op-ed by FBAC Chairman Ken Monroe highlighting the need to enact further reforms to the Private Attorneys General Act (PAGA). The piece is behind the SBJ’s paywall, but if you’re not a subscriber here’ are the first few paragraphs: Last June, the b...
