This week's student spotlight, Steven Millsap, is in his second semester of our RN program. Congratulations on being an outstanding SCC student nurse ! Keep up the good work!

Why he decided to pursue nursing as a career: Pursuing nursing was an inevitable step for me in my career path. I have been in the medical field for over 15 years, and a majority of my time has been in the operating room. I have a true passion for surgery and find it extremely gratifying to work in a team where our hard work can yield immediate results. We improve outcomes, alleviate pain, and save lifes. On my journey to becoming an RN I have been fortunate enough to be surrounded by influential people who have inspired me. My wife continues to push me to be the best version of myself, and I wanted my daughters to witness the importance of a higher education.

A personal challenge he has overcome while in school:
The biggest challenge was finding the right time to go back to school. It's hard to navigate the school-work-life balance at an older age with the increased responsibilities of family, job, mortgage, bills, etc.. It's easy to get lost and stressed in it all, but that's why it's important to have an amazing support system backing you.

A subject or topic he finds most intriguing:
Pathophysiology is my jam. Im constantly learning new things about disease/injury processes.

His plans after graduation:
After crushing the NCLEX, I plan to hit the O.R doors running. I am going to get my CNOR and bridge to my BSN/MSN. At some point I would like to advance my practices as a CRNFA.

How he represents the "Image of Nursing" in his everyday life as a student nurse:
I believe I represent the "Image of Nursing" in my life by advocating for my patients and those around me. In order to be successful in this field I understand the importance of continuing education and holding myself to a higher ethical standard. I also recognize the significance of the future of nursing and supporting our success.

One piece of advice he would share with his nursing peers: Some advice I would like to share is something that I don't hear enough. It's that we are human, and we will make mistakes. Rather in school or in the field you will make mistakes, and that's expected. What is important is what we take from those mistakes to better ourselves and our practices. Remember, you can't control the outcomes of every event, but we are given the tools to navigate them.

Come join us tuesday, October 17th for our guest speaker Lacey Anderson!

A little bit about Lacey:
I graduated the sutter center for health professional accelerated nursing program that was partnered with SCC in May of 2009. I struggled to find a job and worked in a SNF for about 6 months before I got hired on med/surg at sutter auburn. I wanted more so I left for CVIU at sutter memorial after a year. I did that until 2013. Then I became per diem and I finally felt confident enough to head to the ER. I worked there I until 2020. Now I work on the heart cath holding unit at SMCS and an outpatient eye surgery center, both per diem

This week's student spotlight, Jordan McClain, is in his first semester of our RN program. Congratulations on being an outstanding SCC student nurse ! Keep up the good work!

Why he decided to pursue nursing as a career:
I decided to pursue nursing as a career because of my passion for caring for others and being able to pursue a career where I can consistently expand my base of applicable knowledge.

A personal challenge he has overcome while in school:
A really big personal challenge I have overcome in the first few weeks of school is concurrently improving the quality of my studying while actively assessing what I else I need to learn for a relevant topic.

A subject or topic he finds most intriguing:
Pharmacology

His plans after graduation:
I wish to begin my nursing career by working in the emergency department for a year to pick up on well rounded skills. Given the time i will get to spend in clinicals, I am working to see if I may be interested in working in a MedSurge department.

How he represents the "Image of Nursing" in her everyday life as a student nurse:
The “image of nursing” to me is a term that highlights what is necessary in selflessness and decision making in order to provide one’s patient with the necessary care they need for healing. I believe that I represent the image of nursing at this moment due to how I have not only been improving academically, but because I have also been active in changing my mindset and being aware of what will be needed of me beyond nursing school. I want to thirst for knowledge for the benefit of those whom I will have the privilege to call my patient in the future.
One piece of advice she would share with her nursing peers:
In all honesty, I have already learned more from my classmates than I could ever give to them. They are bright and ingenious in identifying solutions.

One really great piece of advice that helped me improve my academic success at this point was flashcards. If it isn’t the investment you provide making them, it’s that you can record yourself reading them and then following along with yourself.

Come join us this week for an exciting guest speaker!

A little bit about Samantha:

“Hi! My name is Samantha Beckerle! I’m 24 years old, I currently live in Houston, Texas where I work as a registered nurse in Labor and Delivery! I graduated from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Nursing with my BSN in December of 2021, and have been working as a registered nurse since January 2022! While at TTUHSC SON, I was heavily involved in TNSA (Texas Nursing Student Association) and had many roles such as cohort rep, VP, and President! I’ve been working as a labor and delivery nurse now for about a little over a year and a half, and I truly love it with all of my heart. Fun fact, I did a bit of travel nursing before moving to Houston, and got paid to do covid tests on a TV set in Arizona! I also have the sweetest black cat named Millie who is my bestie! Can’t wait to talk to y’all about nursing and to answer any questions y’all may have! :)”

This week's student spotlight, Michelle Zupan, is in her first semester of our RN program. Congratulations Michelle on being an outstanding SCC student nurse! Keep up the good work!

Why she decided to pursue nursing as a career: I am drawn to nursing because it is a way to help & care for others. When I was younger, my grandfather was in the hospital, and I was inspired by the people providing care to him. I want to be that person and make a difference. I also like that there are various specialties in the field with different options to explore.

A personal challenge she has overcome while in school: Figuring out how to balance home life, school, and work has been the biggest challenge. I have two little ones at home, I’m still working a lot, and trying to absorb everything at school and clinical. I'm making it work though!

A subject or topic she finds most intriguing: I am looking forward to pediatrics and L&D next semester.

Her plans after graduation: I would love to begin working as a nurse and complete an RN-BSN program if I don’t do it concurrently with SCC. I'm not sure what department to work in, I'm keeping an open mind during school and clinical experiences.

How she represents the "Image of Nursing" in her everyday life as a student nurse: By being kind and helpful to others. I am compassionate and try to help people to the best of my ability. I also enjoy learning and have a great deal of respect for the subject matter.

One piece of advice she would share with her nursing peers: Be organized and effective with your time management skills. Nursing school is hard, but planning helps

This week's student spotlight, Erika Pierce, is in her second semester of our RN program. Congratulations on being an outstanding SCC student nurse ! Keep up the good work!

Why she decided to pursue nursing as a career: I was introduced to the nursing profession while I was in college. I was pursuing a science degree and wanted to work in health care but I was not sure in which field. I had a conversation with a friend that was pursuing nursing and she told me that I should look into it. Over the next few weeks, I researched the profession, schools and what I needed to apply and that was the beginning of my nursing journey.

A personal challenge she has overcome while in school: A challenge I’ve had to overcome was returning to school as a fulltime student with a family. I took my pre-requisite courses one at a time while working fulltime and I found it was very manageable. The same can’t be said of nursing school. Managing school in addition to my family life has been a juggling act. Luckily, I have a solid support system cheering me on and stepping in when I need to focus on school.

A subject or topic she finds most intriguing: The most intriguing topic I’ve covered so far is obstetrics. It has really piqued my interest and challenged me.

Her plans after graduation: Upon graduation, I will be utilizing the Sac State bridge program in to earn my BSN.

How she represents the "Image of Nursing" in her everyday life as a student nurse: I make sure I am ready for new experiences and knowledge. I spend time reflecting on my clinical experiences with the intention of improving upon each day. I review material and ask questions that aid my understanding. I make sure I am ready for new experiences and knowledge. I spend time reflecting on my clinical experiences with the intention of improving upon each day. I review material and ask questions that aid my understanding.

One piece of advice she would share with her nursing peers: Be as gentle with yourself as you are with others. Give yourself a break. Nursing school is tough, stay positive and celebrate the small wins. Whether it’s having a productive study day or understanding a difficult topic; reward yourself and recognize your hard work and diligence is paying off.

This week's student spotlight, Amy Murdock, is in her first semester of our RN program. Congratulations on being an outstanding SCC student nurse Amy! Keep up the good work!

Why she decided to pursue nursing as a career:
I have always had a love for talking with people and getting to know others on a deeper level. I was a hairstylist for many years and was able to build many meaningful relationships with my clients. I knew I wanted to head down a new path in my career and I have always been interested in nursing. I am passionate about human connection, I am fascinated by physiology and nutrition, and I believe everyone should be cared for in a time of need. Nursing is a perfect fit for me.

A personal challenge she has overcome while in school:
I wasn't able to follow through with college after high school, so I started my college courses when my youngest child was 3. I completed all my core courses and prerequisites while raising my children and working. My youngest is now 11, so it has been a long road, but I am thrilled to have made it into the Sac City Nursing program.

A subject or topic she finds most intriguing:
Pharmacology is incredibly intriguing to me, especially after working in the hospital and seeing how many medications patients take.

Her plans after graduation:
After graduation I want to start working as soon as possible. I have a lifetime of experience working a variety of jobs, so I'm ready to hit the ground running. I will continue with my education also, in hopes of obtaining my BSN.

How she represents the "Image of Nursing" in her everyday life as a student nurse:
As a mom, a daughter, and a granddaughter I represent the image of nursing everyday. I care for my children's needs by providing care in every aspect of their lives from social emotional well-being to nutritional requirements. As a daughter, I help my parents navigate healthcare, medications, procedures, and communication with medical providers. As a granddaughter, I assist my grandma with activities of daily living such as hair care, transportation, and social interaction.

One piece of advice she would share with her nursing peers:
One piece of advice I would like to share is to stay positive. Nursing school is a whole different way of learning, and it can be hard to believe in yourself when you aren't used to such a big change. Reach out if needed and don't give up!

This week's student spotlight, Phuong Myers, is in her second semester of our RN program. Congratulations on being an outstanding SCC student nurse Phuong! Keep up the good work!

Why she decided to pursue nursing as a career:
After being cared for by so many amazing nurses when I had my babies, I knew nursing was something I wanted to pursue and could do myself. I find great reward in helping others and love science so nursing seemed to be a natural choice.

A personal challenge she has overcome while in school:
A personal challenge that I have overcome is going back to school full-time after a long absence and while taking care of my family. I graduated with my bachelor’s degree, worked in Environmental Health, and then stayed home with my 3 boys for 11 years. I worked on completing my nursing prerequisites through those 11 years with growing my family!

A subject or topic she finds most intriguing:
So far, Obstetrics has been the most intriguing topic for me that we have covered in theory. What a woman's body does to grow a whole other human then birth them is amazing! I also realized that I love the OR and really hope to gain some more surgical experience.

Her plans after graduation:
My plans after graduation are to pass my NCLEX, start my nursing career (hopefully in the OR, Obstetrics, or Pediatrics), and go back to school for my BSN.

How she represents the "Image of Nursing" in her everyday life as a student nurse:
I believe I represent the “Image of Nursing” in my everyday life as a nursing student by being inquisitive, not being afraid to ask questions, advocating for myself and others, paying attention to details, learning from mistakes, and reaching out to others to make sure they succeed too.

One piece of advice she would share with her nursing peers:
Some advice that I have for my nursing peers is to make time for self-care and get enough sleep. Also, find your people and form a small study group. Regular study sessions not only will help you learn and retain the information better but will also help with your mental health to be around others who understand what you are going through. It is true that one of the Fs in nursing school is family. They will become your second family!
