"As a church, we arrive at our positions through gathering in faith, engaging in moral deliberation, recognizing the dignity of every human, and striving for justice. In that spirit, we urge Governor Gavin Newsom to commute the death sentences for all 589 individuals on California’s death row and to work towards abolishing the death penalty in California."

Bishops from the Sierra Pacific Synod - ELCA, Pacifica Synod ELCA, and Southwest California Synod ELCA along with our Director Regina Banks and ELCA Advocacy Senior Director of Witness in Society Rev. Amy Reumann have all signed onto the joint letter.

We are calling on Governor Gavin Newsom to grant universal clemency. Our ask is grounded in the ELCA's 1991 Social Statement on the Death Penalty: "Executions do not restore broken society and can actually work counter to restoration. As a church heeding the call to do justice (Jeremiah 22:3), we minister to a broken society. As a church united for mission, we organize for ministries of restoration."

We urge Governor Gavin Newsom to use his once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to save more than 550 lives by granting universal clemency.

Today, we honor the memory of the Emanuel Nine and continue to commit ourselves to the work of justice, reconciliation and faith.

"Creator God,

You lovingly created every person in Your beautiful image. We confess that we have not loved and protected Your beloved creation well. Racism and hate continue to blossom, disfiguring Your beautiful and divine plan for human life.

Help our unbelief, O God, in the realities of racism and oppression; remove the scales from our eyes and our hearts. Forgive us for our participation, both knowingly and unknowingly, in its flourishing. Give us the courage to remember and share these true stories of cruelty and injustice, and those who, because of it, lost their lives and freedom. Grant us determination and an accountable community to interrupt these unjust systems. Help us to use our voices, our agency, and our faith to advocate for justice.

Amen."

This week, I joined California advocates at the Bread for the World Summit & Advocacy Day held in Washington, DC. Thank you to Bread for the World staff for arranging the event and gathering Christians across the country to advocate for nutrition and anti-hunger programs.

Thank you to the office of Congresswoman Doris O. Matsui, Senator Alex Padilla, and Senator Adam Schiff for meeting with us.

I also got a chance to stop by the ELCA Advocacy office in DC. Thank you for giving me the office tour and welcoming me to the nation’s capitol!

Today is Election Day across the state of California! Polls are open until 8:00 pm. A reminder that if you are in line to vote at 8:00 pm, stay in line as anyone in line when the polls close at 8:00 pm is allowed to vote.

In addition, if you have yet to turn in your mail-in ballot, stop by a ballot drop box, not a post office, to ensure the vote will get counted in time.
