🌲🔥 Good news from the Sierra Foothills!
Members of the Maidu tribes recently came together for a cultural fire stewardship training in the Sierra Foothills, reconnecting with ancestral practices that help heal the land and prevent destructive wildfires.

After years of fire suppression, this return to traditional burning supports native plants, creates safe gathering spaces, and strengthens cultural ties to the land. The event brought together tribal communities and partners to continue this important work—rooted in knowledge handed down over generations.

🌿 Let’s celebrate Indigenous leadership in land stewardship and community resilience!

Amongst the ponderosa pines in California’s Butte County, Maidu women light fires not to destroy but to heal — restoring an ancient garden, and themselves.

🌿 A powerful land-back moment for California tribes

Through the Klamath Indigenous Land Trust, a coalition of Klamath tribes has secured 10,000 acres of ancestral land along the Klamath River in Northern California.

Tribal stewardship of this land will focus on:
🐟 Restoring salmon populations
🌱 Healing the Klamath River ecosystem
🪶 Protecting cultural traditions connected to the land

This is a meaningful step forward for California Native communities, environmental restoration, and tribal sovereignty.

The $10 million purchase is one of the largest of its kind in U.S. history.

✨ Closing Out 2025 ✨

This year began with challenges for Indian Country, creating uncertainty for tribal communities. Despite those obstacles, California tribes moved forward with strength, unity, and leadership.

Throughout 2025, progress was made in advancing tribal sovereignty, restoring ancestral lands, strengthening tribal economies, and deepening partnerships that support Native communities and future generations.

As we welcome the New Year, we honor the resilience of California’s tribal nations and look ahead with hope and determination.

✨ Wishing everyone a safe, healthy, and prosperous New Year. ✨

Today, the California Tribal Chairpersons Association remembers and honors the lives lost at Wounded Knee. On December 29, 1890, more than 250 Lakota men, women, and children were killed at Wounded Knee Creek—one of the most tragic chapters in Tribal history. As we reflect, we also recognize progress.

On December 19, 2025, federal law took effect to return stewardship of land at Wounded Knee to the Oglala Sioux Tribe and the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe, protecting it as sacred ground and a place of remembrance. We honor the ancestors by remembering the truth, protecting sacred sites, and carrying their legacy forward.
