In addiction medicine, how we respond matters.

For individuals navigating substance use disorders, being met with understanding instead of judgment makes a huge difference in someone’s willingness to seek help and stay engaged in treatment.

It’s a reminder of the impact compassion can have in every interaction.

This Memorial Day, we honor and remember those who gave their lives in service to our country.

Addiction and physical dependence are often used interchangeably, but they're not the same.

Physical dependence refers to tolerance and withdrawal, which can occur with many medications. Addiction, or opioid use disorder, includes behavioral patterns such as loss of control and continued use despite harm.

Understanding this distinction is essential to improving both diagnosis and care.

Join CSAM for the 2026 Legislative Action Day and help shape the future of addiction medicine.

On Wednesday, May 6, clinicians, fellows, and advocates will come together in Sacramento to engage directly with state legislators and their staff on key issues impacting patient care—including AB 408, the Physician Health and Wellness bill, and other critical legislation.

Participants will be part of organized teams, receive preparation materials, and take part in scheduled meetings with senators and assembly members to help elevate the voice of the addiction medicine community.

CSAM regrets to inform our community of the passing of Dr. Scott Teitelbaum, DFASAM. A renowned expert in addiction medicine, Dr. Teitelbaum was a strong voice for his patients, using his own recovery experiences to improve care and build a nationally recognized addiction medicine program at the University of Florida. He was a fierce physician advocate, and a great colleague.

CSAM’s Secretary Dr. Anthony Albanese fondly remembers working with Dr Teitelbaum on the ASAM Board of Directors and says “Scott was a terrific leader and advocate for addiction medicine, both patients and providers. He will be missed.”

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, April 19 at Forest Meadows Cemetery-Central at 4100 NW 39th Ave. Gainesville, FL 32606. A celebration of life will be held at a later date at the Florida Recovery Center. In lieu of flowers, Dr. Teitelbaum’s family suggests contributions to the Florida Recovery Center at the University of Florida.
