CSMFO is California’s premier statewide association for municipal finance professionals.

CSMFO is California’s premier statewide association for finance professionals. This includes employees and elected or appointed officials who are involved in government finance for cities, special districts and counties in California. Membership also includes commercial finance professionals, such as brokers, bankers, auditors, and specialized financial consultants. The benefits of networking with government finance professionals and commercial associates from cities, special districts and counties across the State of California are numerous. Over a thousand members strong, we promote excellence in financial management through innovation, continuing education and the professional development of our members. CSMFO members are deeply involved in the key issues facing cities, special districts and counties today. We value honesty and integrity, and strive to adhere to the highest ethical standards.

As my three-year term on the CSMFO Board comes to an end, I reflect on my two-decade tenure with CSMFO and the organization’s robust 70-year legacy. This positive history (and Mutualism!) has been supported by the efforts of so many dedicated people. It really is amazing. This includes thousands of Commercial members over those years. The resulting equation = stronger local agencies, a stronger municipal finance profession, and ultimately an improved California, with local agencies supporting 40 million people in the Golden State!

When people imagine an internship, they often picture filing papers and data entry. While those tasks can be part of the experience, they don’t always create meaningful value for either the intern or the organization.

Our Finance Director and Deputy Finance Director decided to take a different approach with our summer intern. Their goal was to create an internship experience that would provide substantive, hands-on work while also delivering useful results for the department.

The meeting gave attendees an opportunity to explore the City’s beautiful new facility while connecting with governmental and commercial members from throughout the region.

Government finance professionals continually seek ways to streamline the year-end close and audit without compromising transparency, compliance, or reporting quality. To explore these opportunities, a working group formed through the California Society of Municipal Finance Officers (CSMFO) brought together members of the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA), California Society of CPAs (CalCPA), and California Committee on Municipal Accounting (CCMA), with input from GASB staff. Its work culminated in the White Paper on GASB Statement Implementation and Materiality Considerations.
