Improve Your Tomorrow

Improve Your Tomorrow We work to combat academic inequities and build a college to community pipeline.

Improve Your Tomorrow (IYT) was founded in 2013 with the mission to increase the number of young men of color (YMOC) to attend and graduate from colleges and universities.

The team had the opportunity to table at San Juan High School's Open House, and were able to catch the unveiling of their awesome new field.

It was an exciting day filled with community, connection, and school pride. We loved meeting families and chatting with students and staff, while being able to highlight our work on campus and the impact of IYT.

Recently hosted their first annual at North Hennepin Community College, where hundreds of IYT Brothers came together to connect with each other and learn about college and career pathways.

Huge thanks to our host, North Hennepin CC, and our sponsors: John & Denise Graves Foundation, Best Buy, African Career, Education and Resource, Inc. (ACER), and Northstar Education Finance. Without your generosity and support, this event would not have been possible.

Every year we ask ourselves a difficult question: Is this working?

In our latest impact report, three of our stakeholder groups answered:

Our Brothers say IYT is where they feel most like themselves. Their caregivers say they've watched their sons grow, and school leaders who see these young men every day say they're showing up differently in class.

As one parent of an eighth grader put it:
"He's more confident.. He communicates more effectively. He sees his ability to go far in life."

That kind of alignment is rare in youth development. It means the change isn't just something our Brothers are reporting about themselves. It's something the adults closest to them, the people who know them best, are watching unfold.

When we surveyed 3,679 of our Brothers about belonging, they consistently said they feel more like themselves in IYT than at their own school. They feel more connected to adults, more respected by peers, more understood as a person, more like they belong.

This week our IYT Wisconsin Brothers were visited by a very special guest, Governor Tony Evers! He stopped by Verona High School to meet with students and participate in a roundtable discussion about leadership, growth, and future aspirations.

Our Brothers asked thoughtful questions, and demonstrated confidence and maturity as they shared how IYT has shaped their lives.

This visit is a clear signifier of the growth we're seeing in Wisconsin, and we look forward to more engagements with Governor Evers in the future.

IYT's impact starts before high school and our school partners are the first to see it.

"IYT is developing into a game changer for our middle school community…I've seen stronger attendance, better grades and a real sense of belonging that shows up in our hallways every day." — Middle School Principal, Minnesota

As early as sixth grade, our Brothers were met by a mentor, shown a college campus and told their future matters. Middle school is where the foundation is set.

Last year, over 1,200 middle school students were enrolled across our California, Maryland and Minnesota programs.

For students with two to three years in IYT, GPAs climbed from 1.82 in sixth grade to 2.41 by eighth grade, while Ds and Fs steadily dropped.
