Celebrate Juneteenth with a Journey Through History!

Climb aboard for a special trip to one of California’s most inspiring historic destinations! On June 13, the California State Railroad Museum Foundation’s strategic partner, Gold Runner, will offer a special train to the annual Juneteenth Celebration at Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park. There are reduced fares available for this memorable event.

Travel to the remarkable town of Allensworth, the only California community founded, financed, and governed by African Americans. Explore beautifully restored historic buildings, discover the stories of the people who built this thriving community, and experience a day filled with history, culture, music, and celebration.

The park honors the legacy of Col. Allen Allensworth (1842–1914), a visionary leader who escaped slavery, served in the Union Army, became a chaplain, and achieved the rank of lieutenant colonel. He was the highest-ranking African American officer of his time.

The Juneteenth Celebration runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on June 13 and promises a meaningful day of community, education, and inspiration for all ages.

Don't miss this unique opportunity to ride the rails and honor an important chapter in American history.

Thank You, Ty!

I toured this museum with my young kids around 2015, and what struck me then was how familiar it felt from my own visits as a teenager. The cases, the narrative, the sense of a remarkable place whose stories were still waiting to be told in fuller ways.

By the time I joined the Foundation in 2019, those stories were beginning to be told. The Chinese Railroad Workers experience had just opened. The tactile rendition of the Last Spike was complete, and the Museum had fresh energy for the 150th anniversary of the transcontinental railroad's completion. Ty had set this transformation in motion, and seeing what he and the museum's team had built is a large part of why I came to the Foundation.

That was Ty's gift. He saw this museum as more than a collection of locomotives, and he gave the people who work here room to think bigger. He helped make this a place of gathering, of teaching, and of belonging, built of, by, and for the people it serves.

We will miss his leadership, his vision, and his sense of where this work needed to go.

What he started does not leave with him. The Foundation will continue to help fund and promote the work Ty brought to the Museum, and to support those who carry it forward.

Ty, thank you for what you built here and for the standard you set. The City of Sacramento is fortunate to have you, and we know you will bring the same dedication and zeal to the city that you brought to this Museum. Sacramento will be better for your leadership. We were lucky to have it here first. - Tim Schroepfer CEO CSRM Foundation

Longtime California State Railroad Museum volunteers and Sacramento Southern Railroad crew members Chuck Maley and Michele White have been recognized for their years of service to the SSRR with the annual Charles "Mack" McKeen Memorial Award.

Chuck and Michele are both brakemen, conductors and diesel engineers; Chuck is also a steam fireman. In years previous, Chuck ran the conductor training program; with Michele's help, he also dispatched freight crews back when the SSRR handled freight cars for Setzer Forest Products. That service ended in December 2015 with the closure of the plant. Michele also helped with the ticket agent program.

Ilias Athanasiou, the SSRR's chief operating officer, said Chuck and Michele often cover last-minute openings on the schedule, putting in many hours of SSRR service as a result.

Congratulations, Chuck and Michele!
