This Hispanic Heritage Month we recognize that Mexico’s independence has been celebrated in California since 1822.

What’s the big deal today, more than 200 years later?

When Hidalgo raised the cry of independence, he built on two important constitutional ideas: racial equality in citizenship and the abolition of slavery.

During the time that California was a member of the states and territories of the Mexican Republic, its Mexican citizens absorbed these “radical” notions of equality and freedom.

Once Californian passed to US power, these former citizens of Mexico participated in the 1849 California Constitutional Convention and insisted that the future State of California honor Mexico’s earlier commitment to freedom and equality.

Thanks to their efforts to assert their voice, the 1849 California Constitution continued to honor Mexico’s vision of freedom and equality.

Episode Description
May 5, 1862. The French have landed in Mexico. Napoleon III wants to conquer the country and assert France’s imperial dominance in the Americas. In his way? The Mexican army, held up in the city of Puebla.

The Battle of Puebla will come to define this struggle: a European monarch against a fledgling democracy, led by Benito Juárez. Mexico’s victory will be especially celebrated by Latinos in the United States, who are watching this struggle play out while their new country is embroiled in a Civil War. This first holiday, in 1862, would mark the beginning of a new tradition, unique to this new American community.

How is Cinco de Mayo connected to a broad struggle for freedom across the continent in the 1860s? And what does this holiday really mean?

The report points out that Latino labor force entrants also demonstrate demographic force multipliers that will further strengthen the California labor market in the decades ahead. Latinos are more likely to be actively working or seeking work than their non-Latino counterparts.

“Simply put, the California labor force of 2040 already has been born,” declared Hayes-Bautista.

We at UCLA and California Lutheran University invite you to read the report and to share it with your friends, colleagues and contacts.

“A positive Latino natural increase means more workers in the future who have a higher propensity to work. It is now up to the state to step up investment in Latino education, so that the California economy can remain competitive in the knowledge economy,” added Hayes-Bautista.
