☢️ On Jan. 24th, a tsunami caused a massive oil spill off the coast of Lima, Peru. 31 miles of beaches have been covered in toxic oil leaving the natural inhabitants (including varieties of pelicans, cormorants, penguins, and marine otters) in peril. The International Bird Rescue is already sending out teams to help with the cleanup. However, they need our help with things like transportation and supplies.
❗️The Greater Sacramento Chapter of AAZK is willing to match all donations that come in over the next two weeks so that we can send the IBR the support they need! Follow the link to donate now! Amounts of all sizes are graciously appreciated!

🚧 Construction won’t stop us! 🚧
Saturday we took to the streets to clean up the environment and found our section of highway was under construction 🚜🏗 (meaning we were allowed to enter our area due to safety issues)… but we refused to be defeated. At AAZK, we acknowledge that, while our organization is responsible for a portion of land, we as humans are responsible for the planet. So we picked up everything we could find in the surrounding area. Neighboring Canadian Geese supervised the whole operation and flew off once satisfied with our work. 🥰

Did you know?...The Greater Sac AAZK Chapter has an adopt a highway site. This morning four of our chapter members went out and collected trash and debris to help keep microtrash contained and making sure wildlife stays safe. 🚮 Do your part by making sure all your waste ends up on the appropriate receptacles and eliminating possible hazards like cutting up soda pack rings before tossing!

AAZK is a huge conservation partner for rhinoceros, and each year there is a nation wide bowling fundraiser called Bowling for Rhinos. With all that's been happening with the pandemic, AAZK chapters have been getting creative instead of bowling. So, this is our Bowling For Rhinos fundraiser for 2021! Supporting rhinos is as easy as adding a cute houseplant to your home!! We have limited quantities of rhino pots available.

Your order will include:
-rhino planter in your choice of color (white or teal)
-mystery plant
-soil
-potting instructions
-care instructions

Link to our Etsy shop: https://www.etsy.com/listing/1074832878/plant-a-rhino-fundraiser-for-greater-sac 🔗🛒🦏🌱

Unfortunately only local to Sacramento, as we cannot ship the fragile pots and plants with confidence you'll get everything in prime condition!

There are only about 28,000 rhinos left in the wild, with their conservation statuses listing from Near Threatened to Critically Endangered across the 5 species of rhinos.

Buy a plant, help save a rhino! 🦏♥️🌱

In honor of this week's International Primate Day, today's is Ape Action Africa!

Ape Action Africa is based in Cameroon and works hard to save primates from illegal bushmeat & pet trades. They rescue orphaned & injured gorillas, chimps, & monkeys and reintroduce them to protected areas, educate local schools, & work to acquire more protected land for primates to live safely in.

So, what's the difference between monkeys and apes? Look at their bums! Apes don't have tails (like gibbons or orangutans), but monkeys do (like tamarins or colobus).

🐵🦍 International Primate Day⠀

Today is and we're celebrating the amazing strength and resilience of our rescued chimpanzees, gorillas and monkeys. Like all of our orphans, Jacha has overcome a huge amount of trauma. He suffered the terror of seeing his family killed for bushmeat, was taken from the forest, isolated from members of his own species and tied up. After his rescue he was brought to our sanctuary scared, with scars around his waist, dehydrated, and with a swollen stomach from a heavy parasite infestation. Our wonderful human primates have helped Jacha recover from his ordeal and he's grown into a healthy and happy youngster. He spends his days in the forest with other rescued chimps and is becoming more boisterous all the time. (Take a look at our last post to see him wrestling with Simon!) 😍 Thank you so much to all of our supporters for everything that you do to help us care for nearly 300 rescued primates like Jacha. We couldn't save lives without your compassion and generosity, and we greatly appreciate having so many fantastic allies around the world. 🙏💚⠀

If you'd like to take action to help us care for our primates today, please donate at https://www.apeactionafrica.org/donate/donate/credit-card or adopt an ape at www.apeactionafrica.org/adopt-an-ape

is back! Today's great organization is Painted Dog Conservation in honor of Painted Dog Day that happened yesterday. This great organization works on anti-poaching efforts, rehabbing and releasing the painted dogs back out to the wild, and monitor and research wild dog packs. Unfortunately painted dogs are listed as endangered, so all the work Painted Dog Conservation does is highly important to save the species. Go learn more about them, and how you can help these beautiful dogs!

In these turbulent times, it has only been possible to manoeuvre our lives and programs because of your kind support. Read about our success with the community anti-poaching unit volunteers, adapting to the new normal at the Bush Camp, continued research work and denning dogs in our second-quarter report https://www.painteddog.org/our-blog/second-quarter-project-update-2021

Today's is Asian Elephant Support! Did you know, August is Asian Elephant Awareness Month?! Asian Elephant Support is a fantastic group of people working to save elephants. The AES gives financial support to care and conservation of elephants in Asian countries, provide education opportunities for caregivers of elephants in Asian countries, and increase awareness of future needs of Asian elephants and humane treatment of elephants living in captivity. Recently, the AES was able to donate a vehicle to allow veterinary staff to more easily travel between sites to provide care for elephants in Thailand! The biggest threats to Asian Elephants are the Elephant Endotheliotropic Herpesvirus, deforestation for palm oil, and human-elephant conflict. We were very lucky last night to have had a zoom presentation from one of Asian Elephant Support's board members expanding on all the fantastic work they do and educating about Asian elephants. Be sure to check out their social media pages to learn more and donate to help the elephants! 🐘♥️

Today's is Mabula Ground Hornbill Project]! The Mabula Ground Hornbill Project is an organization that focuses on the preservation of the vulnerable Southern Ground-hornbills that live in Southern Africa. They focus on hand rearing second chicks and reintroducing them back to the wild (Ground-hornbills only care for one egg at a time, and with long intervals between hatchings, the loss of a single egg is detremenal!), create nesting sites to promote successful breeding, as well as ample research and education in the area. Learn even more and support them by checking out their sites!
