Take Back the Night is an international feminist tradition of marches and rallies to end violence, occurring around the world since 1976. That year, in Belgium, women attending the International Tribunal on Crimes Against Women marched together in solidarity, holding candles to protest the ways in which violence affects the lives of women worldwide. ABOUT SACRAMENTO TAKE BACK THE NIGHT:
Sacramen
to Take Back the Night aims to resist and end sexual, gender-based, and all forms of violence through awareness-building, empowering survivors, and supporting organizations that provide services to survivors of violence. Take Back the Night works collaboratively with local organizations and service providers in furthering these efforts, year-round. Sacramento Take Back the Night is the informal name of the “Northern California Association for Women Take Back the Night,” a volunteer-run, Sacramento-based 501(c)(3) non-profit. Sacramento Take Back the Night was organized to conduct activities for the purpose of educating the public on issues of violence against women. SACRAMENTO'S ANNUAL RALLY AND MARCH:
Take Back the Night events have been held annually in Sacramento since 1979. The event takes place on Second Saturday in October, and is organized entirely by volunteers, with active participation from many community-based organizations. The Rally features a variety of diverse speakers and performances, and serves as a safe place for survivors of violence to come forward with testimonials. The event offers community resources, activities for children and encourages men to become actively involved in ending violence. For many, the March is the highlight of the evening, as attendees walk through the night and reclaim the streets, which for many years have been a source of fear and violence. Sacramento Take Back the Night is an empowering, community-based event which brings survivors and their loved ones, activists and community members alike, in a call to resist and end sexual, gender-based and all forms of violence. DO WE STILL NEED TO TAKE BACK THE NIGHT? YES!
