Rebuilding Together began in 1974 and has since become the largest non-profit, volunteer home rehabilitation organization in America. The Sacramento affiliate launched in 1991 - as a barn raising activity to help low-income homeowners in need of home repairs.

For Grace, home is where generations connect. She has lived in her New Mexico home for more than 20 years, sharing it with her grandson.

In recent years, her home no longer provided the safety or comfort she needed. With a broken window, no handrails for mobility, and electricity problems, the issues were piling up. And being on a fixed income, Grace felt repairs were out of reach.

Rebuilding Together Sandoval County stepped in to help with repairs, because instead of replacing homes, we fix them — making them safer, more accessible, and easier to maintain for people like Grace.

Our country’s approach to affordable housing isn’t getting us anywhere. We can’t build our way out of it if
we let the affordable homes we already have quietly disappear from our communities.

But for the same national average cost as building 1 new home, Rebuilding Together can fix 18.

For our older neighbors like Edward, keeping up with home repairs as you age can be challenging.

A combat veteran, Edward needed critical but simple repairs to his home to make it safer and more comfortable for everyday living.

With a team of volunteers from Rebuilding Together: restored water access to the bathroom, installed grab bars to reduce fall risk and installed a handrail at the entrance to the home.
Simple fixes like these make the home livable for Edward, and one more affordable home is preserved.

If your dishes were dirty would you just break them? Of course not. So why do we let perfectly good homes go into disrepair?

Rebuilding Together Sacramento is proud to be part of a national network of Rebuilding Together affiliates who work hard every day to help house Americans safely.

What an incredible way to kick off the fall with two Rebuild projects!

A huge thank you to all of the volunteers who recently gave their time, energy, and talents to help make homes safer and comfortable for two older adults in Rancho Cordova.

Together, volunteers tackled an enormous amount of yardwork, painting, tree trimming, flooring, fencing, minor repairs, and so much more. We are also incredibly grateful to and the City of Rancho Cordova Govt sponsoring these projects and making this work possible.

But perhaps the best way to describe the impact is through the words of one of the homeowners, Larry, “I don’t have the words to express my thanks for all the work that the volunteers did at my house. I would never have been able to do it without them. They all worked extremely hard and did a fantastic job. My home looks 100% better. Thank you to everyone.”

That’s what Rebuilding Together is all about. Neighbors coming together to help neighbors remain safe and comfortable in the homes they love.

We’re one week away from our next Rancho Cordova Rebuild! And with the next one right around the corner, we could use your help this September 💪

On September 12th and 19th, volunteers will come together to help our neighbors with important home repairs and maintenance. Every project helps create safer homes, improve lives, and revitalize our community!

Volunteer projects include:

Volunteers of all skill levels are welcome, with skilled volunteers especially encouraged to lend a hand. Continental breakfast, lunch, T-shirts, tools, materials, and equipment will be provided.

Our Greener Spaces, Healthier Places workshops brought Sacramento County students, ages 14–18, together for hands-on learning and community service.

In partnership with Sierra Service Project, students built indoor planters and added pet-friendly plants known to support indoor air quality. They also heard from Northern California Construction Training Inc. about construction careers and SMUD about STEM education.

Each completed planter was gifted to a senior previously served through our Safe at Home program, connecting new skills with a meaningful way to give back.

Thank you to the students, Sierra Service Project and our presenters. And, a big thank you to SMUD for funding these 2026 workshops.
