Meet Steve, a long-time Docent on Duty at the California Museum 🌟

Steve has volunteered with us for for over half a decade, sharing his knowledge with Museum visitors of all ages. Passionate about educating others on the experiences of Japanese Americans before, during, and after WWII incarceration, he brings "Uprooted" to life through stories drawn from his own family history.

Steve will be here next on Saturday, June 6th, and he's ready to lead guided tours of "Uprooted" and answer your questions from from 12:00 – 2:00 pm.

💭 If you can't make it Saturday, keep an eye out at CaliforniaMuseum.org/Docent-on-Duty for the most up-to-date info on when you can interact with our "Uprooted" docents next.

Last week, our Exhibits Director Amanda and Education Director Sean touched down in Philadelphia for the Annual Meeting & Museum Expo. ✈️

Hosted by the American Alliance of Museums, this event brings together museums of all types and sizes to connect, learn, and collaborate with professionals from across the country. This year, Sean and Amanda had the opportunity to explore Philadelphia museums and historical sites, like the Eastern State Penitentiary, to further inform their work and reaffirm the California Museum’s mission to share the "hard histories" and lesser-told stories of our state.

After months and in some cases years of virtual collaboration, it was also a long-overdue chance to finally connect with exhibit partners face to face. All in all, it was a pleasure to learn from our colleagues near and far, bringing fresh ideas and new connections back to the California Museum. 🧡

Watch as expert docent Kris Sazaki shares insight on her favorite artifact in our "Uprooted" exhibit: the handmade 'hanafuda' cards. Made from scavenged electrical board, Choji Nakan recreated the traditional art on these game cards from memory during his incarceration at Tule Lake. His cards were so popular, he began making sets for other camps, too!

As a "Docent on Duty," Kris is available periodically in our "Uprooted" exhibit to answer questions and lead in-depth tours for guests, all included with admission.

🗓️ Kris will be here next this Saturday, May 30, from 1–3 pm!
Follow along at CaliforniaMuseum.org/DocentOnDuty for the latest updates on Kris' future appearances.

Happy Harvey Milk Day! Today, we're celebrating the birthday of Harvey Milk, inductee and the first openly gay person elected to significant public office in the United States. 🏳️‍🌈

After moving to San Francisco in 1972, Milk publicly declared his homosexuality and encouraged others to do the same, believing visibility was the only path to equality for LGBTQ+ people. His bravery helped pave the way for LGBTQ+ rights, inspiring countless individuals to stand up for equality and acceptance.

Today, we honor his legacy and the ongoing fight for a more inclusive society.
