That charger sitting in your drawer might look like it will work — but when it comes to lithium-ion batteries, the right charger matters.

We want to remind you to:

🔌 Use the cord and charger that came with your device whenever possible.
✅ If you need a replacement, choose one approved or recommended by the manufacturer.
🚫 Avoid using damaged, incompatible, or counterfeit chargers and cables.

Using the wrong charger can damage a battery and increase the risk of overheating or fire.

🔥 A few extra seconds to choose the right charger can help protect your home, your family, and your community.

And remember: Never charge a device under a pillow, on a bed, or somewhere it can overheat. Give your devices a safe place to charge on a hard, stable surface.

🔋🔥 CHARGE INTO FIRE SAFETY! 🔥🔋

Our phones, laptops, e-bikes, scooters, power tools, and so many other everyday devices rely on rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. These batteries store a lot of energy in a small space — which is why safe charging and knowing the warning signs matter.

As we celebrate Fire Prevention Week, Firefighters Burn Institute wants to remind you:

🚨 STOP using a device immediately if the battery:
• Smells unusual
• Gets unusually hot
• Makes popping or hissing sounds
• Changes shape or color
• Begins to swell or leak
• Produces smoke

If it’s safe to do so, move the device away from anything that can burn, get outside, and call 911. Never put yourself at risk trying to save a device.

⚡ A few simple habits can help prevent a battery fire:
✔️ Use the charger and cable recommended by the manufacturer.
✔️ Charge on a hard, stable surface — not under a pillow or on a bed.
✔️ Inspect batteries for damage, swelling, or leaks.
✔️ Never put lithium-ion batteries in the trash or regular recycling.

The Firefighters Burn Institute believes fire prevention starts with education. This Fire Prevention Week, take a few minutes to “CHARGE” into safety and share these tips with someone you love. ❤️‍🔥

This past weekend, we got to join the City of Rocklin Fire Department at their open house to kick off Fire Prevention Week! We met so many amazing families and taught them all about fire safety and burn prevention! Thank you to everyone who stopped by and to Rocklin Fire Station 23 and Rocklin Firefighters for having us!

🔥 Did you know Fire Prevention Week has been around for over 100 years?

Fire Prevention Week traces its history back to 1922, when the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) began sponsoring Fire Prevention Week in the United States and Canada.

The observance commemorates the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, which began on October 8 and burned for several days, destroying thousands of buildings and leaving more than 100,000 people without homes.

President Calvin Coolidge proclaimed the first National Fire Prevention Week in 1922, making it the longest-running public health observance in the United States.

Today, Fire Prevention Week continues to remind us that fire safety starts with prevention, preparation, and education. 🧯🏠

FFBI had a blast getting burn survivors and volunteers out on the water at Black Miners Bar over the long summer to stand up paddleboard. Thanks to all who checked it out and participated in this great community! We'll be back to offer SUP in 2027.
