“The ultimate goal is to benefit everyone,” said Ernest Uwazie, Division of Criminal Justice chair. Uwazie and Alexa Sardina, a Criminal Justice assistant professor, oversee the project.

“The crime has been committed,” said Uwazie, who teaches a restorative justice course. “But what can we do to reduce the likelihood of it happening to another person, and to help the victim heal?”

At Folsom prison, Sac State professors are leading workshops designed to help violent criminals come to terms with their crimes and the harm they have caused. Formerly incarcerated students who are pursuing degrees at Sacramento State soon will have a home near campus where they can live, study, and plan for the future after their release from prison.
Total funding of $1.1 million will finance the home and its operation, the money coming from a $550,000 grant from the Project Rebound Consortium and $275,000 each from Sac State’s auxiliary University Enterprises, Inc. (UEI), and the office of President Robert S. Nelsen.”

Sac State will purchase and operate a home to provide housing for formerly incarcerated students enrolled in the highly successful Project Rebound while they pursue their higher education. “It’s really hard to show to the Prisoner Review Board the robustness of a person’s relationships or the depth of a person’s intellectual engagement,” Soble said. “For someone like Johnny, that probably will be substantially easier. He’s got all of this sort of incredible credentialing of someone who is participating in a Ph.D. program.”

Johnny Pippins has already completed a master’s degree from prison. To pursue a Ph.D., he needs Illinois' governor to let him out early.
