We need your help! Can you come to:
700 H Street

(County Administration building)
Tuesday, 3/28 at 9:30 a.m.
Bring a friend or loved one.

As much as we would like for you to attend, if you cannot make the meeting you may still call your elected Supervisor for your district to express your opinion on this issue. You may find the contact information for your specific district here: https://bos.saccounty.gov/Pages/default.aspx

Due to an undelivered $1 million in ARPA funds promised by the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors, the financial future of Sacramento Self-Help Housing (SSHH) is in crisis and uncertain. Unless the County Board of Supervisors moves quickly to make good on its promise and provides immediate unrestricted funds to its current contract host (SSHH), the resulting impact could mean an abrupt collapse and closure for SSHH, subsequent loss of housing for a total of 667 individuals in Sacramento and San Joaquin counties currently housed in SSHH programs, and the elimination of 180 jobs.

Unless immediate action is taken, Sacramento Self-Help Housing will not be able to pay current leases and operating obligations, resulting in the loss of housing to 667 people currently housed in its programs and unemployment for 180 people.

An alternative operator is not currently in place to allow for a sensible wind down and/or transfer of all programs to viable operators, with as many tenants and service employees secured as possible.

An abrupt closure of SSHH would cause undue and irreversible damage to the entire Continuum of Care throughout the capital region.

We need the Board of Supervisors to fulfill their promise to provide $1,000,000 in emergency funding under the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA).

If you cannot show up in person, you may also telephone in to give comments. On the day of the meeting dial (916) 875-2500 to make a verbal public comment (follow the prompts for instructions). Refer to the agenda and listen to the live meeting to determine when is the best time to call to be placed in queue for a specific agenda item.

As you know our financial situation is dire, and the lack of operating money could force an abrupt closure in the future, endangering ALL our programs. If that happened around 667 people currently housed by SSHH would be at risk of becoming homeless again.

Every year during the coldest months of the winter, Citrus Heights HART hosts a winter sanctuary program for their community. Daily, unhoused neighbors are invited to spend the night out of the cold and receive much-needed professional housing navigation services by Sacramento Self-Help Housing and other life-saving medical or mental health care resources. They are greeted with a clean cot and warm clothing and served a hot meal prepared by community volunteers.

Aside from the resources, the sanctuary program creates a sense of safety and community among all guests and volunteers involved. It also gives SSHH's navigation staff a consistent place to meet those needing housing resources.

Connecting unhoused individuals to resources can be complex when living on the street. Phones run out of battery; paperwork is lost - communication often falters. "The winter sanctuary gives us a weekly chance to keep up with our cases," says the navigator. "It's important that we move quickly when a housing opportunity is available. Knowing that the client will be at winter sanctuary in a safe and welcoming place is a great help in moving people off the street. They feel comfortable and have the peace of mind to be responsive to our services."

The Citrus Heights HART winter sanctuary program, will operate for eight weeks this year. Every night is a chance to impact the lives of one of our unhoused neighbors and build trust and togetherness among all involved. It is called "sanctuary" for a reason. It is a place to get out of the elements and be at peace while receiving life-saving services.

This year, our navigator program has met with fifteen different unhoused individuals daily. Thirty-five have received ID, all have been connected to mental and physical healthcare services, and three have secured permanent housing.

Meet Sharon.

Sharon is one of Sacramento Self-Help Housing's all-star House Managers. Sharon loves to cook, stay organized, and thrift shop. Aside from managing one of SSHH's PSH houses, she caters private events and loves spending time with her children and two grand furbabies.

Four years ago, Sharon was living in hotels. She fell on hard times when she struggled to find sustainable employment. Luckily she connected with an SSHH outreach worker that recommended her for the House Manager role. Sharon has a lot of work experience as a chef, professional cook, and baker. Similar to working in the kitchen, she is a good manager of people and personalities and likes offering guidance to everyone she connects with.

In SSHH's housing programs, the House Manager oversees the house's day-to-day function while being a resource for the residents in the program. Like Sharon, many house leaders have lived experience with homelessness.

Sharon is thankful for the opportunity to be part of SSHH's programs. She has grown and is confident she will never deal with housing issues again. House Managers are given free housing and a monthly stipend for being SSHH’s ears to the ground. "The house manager position helped me work on my credit score. It has improved a lot since I started four years ago. I have also grown as a human being. I recognize that everyone is going through something and faces their own challenges. I often need to remind myself kindness is free."
