Sacramento--For over 3 weeks unhoused residents of multiple motels operated by the City of Sacramento have been reaching out to local organizations and local activists to say that food services have stopped.
We have confirmed this and have been told that funding had run out. Most of the people in the motels are high risk, seniors, and disabled. When we reached out to the City of Sacramento, we were told they were given resources: a list of local food banks. This is inaccessible to the unhoused. Food Insecurity is dangerous. There has been positive movement around food security in City Hall, but this is a critical issue for those in the City operated motels.
The Sacramento Homeless and the Sacramento Poor People’s campaign will host a press conference on Friday, March 25 at 10am to discuss Food insecurity in Sacramento and its impact on the unhoused and low-income community members.
It's estimated that in 2020 food insecurity affected 43% (174,000) of adults and 42% (63,000) of children in low-income households within Sacramento County, according to Nourish California, a nonprofit food policy advocacy organization
