Sacramento Urban Debate League - SUDL What is Urban Debate? According to the NAUDL, debate is an academic sport that builds reading, research, communication and critical thinking skills.

The Sacramento Urban Debate League's mission is to bring the education of policy debate to as many high school students in the Sacramento region as possible, with a focus on access for low income students. Each year high school debaters throughout the country debate a single complex policy question, or resolution, for an entire year. In 2013-2014, students are debating whether the federal governme

nt should substantially increase its economic engagement toward Cuba, Mexico or Venezuela. Coached by teachers, debaters conduct extensive research on the resolution and develop arguments for and against it. Debaters hone their arguments in afterschool practices and compete at weekend tournaments. Two-person teams participate in a series of 75-minute debates and each team alternates sides, arguing for the resolution in one round and against it in the next. Competitive debate has always been available to students at suburban schools, but it has never been widely available in more cash-strapped urban public schools. Urban debate programs level the playing field, giving urban students access to the same academically rigorous debate programs available to their suburban peers. The National Association of Urban Debate Leagues (NAUDL) currently supports a network of urban debate in nineteen cities around the country. Last year these programs served 7,301 urban high school and middle school students. Eighty-six percent of urban debaters are students of color and 76% are from low-income families.

Hello,

I post tonight to ask for your help. SUDL was awarded a large grant from the California State Legislature in Summer, 2022. We intended to operate much of SUDL's program on the grant. However, the grant money has yet to flow to us, and it is unlikely to do so until at least February, 2024. We also unexpectedly lost one source of funding, and had another funding source dramatically cut. As a result, SUDL has an immediate, and hopefully short term, cash flow problem. We need financial resources to maintain the 6 programs we currently have, and to allow us to begin the 3 new programs that will be funded with the legislature money, until the legislature money flows to us. .

We would appreciate any financial help you can give us to allow us to make it until the legislature money comes to us. We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. It is with great sadness that I share the passing of Wes Loofbourrow. Wes was a fixture in Sacramento and Bay Area debate for over 20 years beginning with his competing in Lincoln-Douglas debate at Jesuit High School in Sacramento. He then competed for Santa Clara University, and went on to coach and judge all styles of debate, including coaching and judging for SUDL. I got to know Wes when I coached him at Jesuit. We stayed in touch and became great friends. Although he struggled at various points in his life, Wes never lost his love for debate or his love for life. He will be greatly missed.

I will share in another post if a celebration of life planned.
