When we started Carrie's TOUCH, I didn't know what the heck I was doing. I worked for the state at that time. I had gainful employment, sufficient healthcare, retirement in place, investments in place, all of these things. Then I'm diagnosed with breast cancer, and I hear God say, "Start a nonprofit."
My first question to God was, "What's a nonprofit?" My second question was, "Do people make money in a nonprofit?"
My late sister Lynne and I started down this quest to help Black women navigate breast cancer, because I'd had such a struggle finding support from women who looked like me, who had the same conversations as me, and some of the same lived experiences.
We were approaching our one-year anniversary, August of 2007, trying to figure out what was next. We held our first board retreat and brought in a nonprofit strategist to help us vision cast. The cards you see up on the board, that's the spreadsheet of 2007.
That's where performing actually began. Lynne and I wore scarves on our heads like Laverne and Shirley and performed in a restaurant, in a secluded section, doing a skit about where we wanted to see Carrie's TOUCH. At that time we were just shooting to reach our 10 year milestone.
Edutainment (education and entertainment combined) has always been the through line for Carrie's TOUCH.
That’s why “Dinner with the Youngers” is so special. It’s where education, entertainment, community, and healing come together.
As we celebrate this milestone it is important to us that as many survivors as possible can be part of the celebration. So, our call to action is two-fold:
