Getting to be a mentor for GLGO has been such a huge blessing for me. This program has helped me learn so much about my own emotions and experience and Ive gotten to participate in so many cool outdoor/nature-focused things this year that I never wouldโ€™ve tried on my own. Itโ€™s also pushed me past my comfort zones in ways Iโ€™d never expect and Iโ€™ve gotten to grow so much as a person.
Everyone โ€” from the students to the staff โ€” are so welcoming and theyโ€™ve all inspired me to be more kind and courageous, especially the students. These kids never stop surprising me in how bold, generous, and funny they are. Coming in to mentor classes for them is something I get to look forward to doing every week.

I donโ€™t think Iโ€™ll ever stop talking about how amazing this program is and Iโ€™m so grateful Iโ€™ve gotten to be a part of it.

Every student has a story that others can't see. One of the ways we help students tell those stories is through art.

In our Walk a Mile in My Shoes project, students decorate a shoe with the hidden stressors, challenges, and experiences they carry every dayโ€”๐ญ๐ก๐ข๐ง๐ ๐ฌ ๐ญ๐ก๐š๐ญ ๐จ๐Ÿ๐ญ๐ž๐ง ๐ ๐จ ๐ฎ๐ง๐ฌ๐ž๐ž๐ง ๐›๐ฒ ๐œ๐ฅ๐š๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ฆ๐š๐ญ๐ž๐ฌ, ๐ญ๐ž๐š๐œ๐ก๐ž๐ซ๐ฌ, ๐š๐ง๐ ๐ž๐ฏ๐ž๐ง ๐Ÿ๐ซ๐ข๐ž๐ง๐๐ฌ.

For many students, this is the first time they've expressed these struggles through words or images. When they choose to share their shoes with trusted peers or mentors, something powerful happens: understanding grows, walls come down, and deeper connections begin to form.

This project reminds us that we never fully know what someone else is carrying. Behind every behavior is a story. Behind every student is a human being longing to be understood.

When we head into the outdoors, we're not just preparing one or two peopleโ€”we're often outfitting ๐Ÿ”๐ŸŽ+ ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ฎ๐๐ž๐ง๐ญ๐ฌ, ๐ฆ๐ž๐ง๐ญ๐จ๐ซ๐ฌ, ๐š๐ง๐ ๐ฌ๐ญ๐š๐Ÿ๐Ÿ for the journey ahead.

These shoes are making their way home after another incredible trip, carrying stories of challenge, growth, friendship, and adventure.

For a backpacking trip, every participant needs:
๐ŸŽ’ A properly fitted backpack
๐Ÿฅพ Sturdy hiking boots with good tread and ankle support
โ›บ A tent
๐Ÿณ Cook gear
๐Ÿงฅ Warm, waterproof layers
๐Ÿงค Cold-weather gear
๐Ÿ’ง Water filtration and safety equipment..and much more.

My name is Lynx and I just graduated from UC Davis with a degree in Human Development and Psychology! My time as a mentor with GLGO has been so meaningful and beautiful. I could say a million things about GLGO and still feel like it doesnโ€™t fully capture how special it is. The compassion the students show is something you can truly see, and it reflects the impact of the program. They treat each other with a level of respect and kindness thatโ€™s rare, which is modeled by the incredible adults in the classroom. GLGO has created a genuine supportive community where students feel safe opening up, building meaningful relationships, and navigating real-life challenges together. Even as a mentor, I find myself using the skills we talk about in class, which speaks to how powerful this program really is. Itโ€™s a gift to be a part of GLGO.

Washington Unified students just completed our 3 day end of the year backpacking trip to Point Reyes.

This trip asks a lot of them. Dive deep, try harder, be vulnerable.

They need self sufficiency and team reliance to get this trip done. There's a long hike, a heavy pack and eventually, the realization that all things are possible when you know how to trust yourself and those around you.

Congratulations WUSD students (and mentors!) We are so proud of you!
