Meet Tate, a graduate of UC Davis and a Green Light GO Mentor.

Our mentors don’t just guide adventures—they build trust, spark confidence, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐩 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐭𝐡.

𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬: 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐋𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐆𝐎 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮? Being a part of GLGO has been an extremely rewarding experience that has not only fostered some of my favorite moments working with California Youth, but given me the chance to see them learn and grow as well. The personal connection that I’ve been able to make with students has given me the opportunity to be more involved with that growth than anything I’ve yet to be a part of. I’ve been moved by the things the students I’ve mentored have overcome, and it’s given me so much hope for the next generation and those still yet to come. So much of today’s sociocultural climate can feel hopeless for young people, but it’s become so abundantly clear that GLGO makes real impact and works to teach students the foundation they need to grow into stronger individuals ready to tackle whatever life throws at them. I couldn’t be more proud to be a part of this wonderful organization especially after seeing the impact firsthand, and am so happy that I found it.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐬 𝐤𝐢𝐝𝐬 𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐚𝐭 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐋𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐆𝐎 𝐝𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐩 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦 𝐧𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞—𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐩 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦 𝐬𝐮𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐬𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥.

Research shows that programs focused on skills like 𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟-𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭, 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐦-𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞, 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡𝐲 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩𝐬, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧-𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 can have a measurable impact on academic achievement—with students showing an 11-percentile-point gain in academic performance.

And we’re seeing that impact firsthand: 𝟖𝟒% 𝐨𝐟 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐋𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐆𝐎 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐬𝐚𝐢𝐝 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐜𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐬 𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐩𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦 𝐝𝐨 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐢𝐧 𝐬𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥.

When students feel more confident, learn how to navigate challenges, and have the tools to keep going when things get hard, that growth carries into the classroom.

A big lesson we teach our students that 𝐬𝐮𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐢𝐬𝐧’𝐭 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐧𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐟𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠—𝐢𝐭’𝐬 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐨 𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐮𝐩 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐝𝐨. 💚

There will be setbacks. There will be mistakes. There will be moments when things don’t go the way you hoped. That’s not the opposite of success—it’s 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐢𝐭.

Every challenge is a chance to learn, adjust, build resilience, and try again.

𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬: 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐋𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐆𝐎 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮? If someone were to ask what GLGO meant to me, I would say that it is a place that was a stepping stone to showing me who I am and the person I want to become. GLGO has given me a community, a purpose, as well as a place that I can feel supported while also supporting the students at the same time. It has shaped the way I show up for others with my confidence, my leadership, and my care. More than anything, GLGO has helped me to grow into a new version of myself that I’m not only proud of but happy with as well. I’m happy that I got to share so many great memories with GLGO and I’m excited to see how it shapes my future.

We periodically ask our students to reflect on what they have learned during their year with Green Light GO. Sometimes the most powerful measure of our impact is hearing it in a student's own words. 💚

An emotional vocabulary is a powerful tool! When young people learn to understand their emotions and express themselves in healthy ways, it strengthens every part of their lives—from friendships and family to school and beyond. These are skills they will carry with them for a lifetime.

This is why we do what we do.
