Meet Steven, a student at UC Davis and a Green Light GO Mentor.

Our mentors don’t just guide adventures—they build trust, spark confidence, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐩 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐭𝐡.

𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬: 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐋𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐆𝐎 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮? Serving as a mentor for Green Light GO was an amazing experience that marked a pivotal turning point in my life. I witnessed firsthand the power of mentorship for students who simply sought to be heard and understood. By cultivating relationships built on trust, I was able to provide a safe, non-judgmental space for students to express their authentic selves. This program demonstrates the critical need of a positive support system within the classroom. My time in the program prompted a shift in what I wanted for myself, ultimately inspiring my commitment to becoming an educator. The skills I gained at Green Light GO have been foundational to both my academic pursuits and my personal development, fostering a deeper sense of empathy and resilience. Today, I carry those lessons into my own classroom, applying the strategies I learned to support students with similar needs. I remain certain that my time as a mentor was a life-altering experience that continues to shape my professional path for the better.

We just returned from 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐞𝐞 𝐝𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐜𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐡𝐢𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧 𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 with our students! 🌲⛺️💚

We cooked our own food, put up our own tents, explored, laughed, made new friends and played games from dawn ’til dusk.

There were s’mores, sunscreen, dirt on absolutly everything, tired legs, big smiles—and all the benefits that come from spending a few days immersed in the great outdoors.

Three days outside. A whole lot of memories. And maybe a little more confidence in what we’re capable of. 💚

Sometimes they’re cheering from the sidelines. Sometimes they’re holding the rope while a student discovers just how high they can climb. But they’re always there—helping our students feel safe, supported, and brave enough to try hard things.

We couldn’t do this without you, mentor team! You do so much more than you know! 💚

In a world that can feel uncertain, our mentors offer something powerful: 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲, 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐟 𝐢𝐧 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭’𝐬 𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥.

𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬: 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐋𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐆𝐎 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮? GLGO has shown me the importance of mentorship and positive youth relationships. I've learned that when children feel supported by trusted mentors, their social skills and academic performance greatly improve. Ultimately, kids feel seen, heard, confident, and resilient. In turn, so do I. Seeing this growth firsthand has reinforced my interest in youth development and behavioral health. There is a need for organizations such as Green Light GO to be integrated into schools and communities, and I’m proud to be a part of it.

Sometimes the best moments happen when the roles reverse. 💚

Our students are used to having teachers and mentors cheering them on as they try hard things. This time, they got to return the favor.

Watching them encourage their teacher up the climbing wall—calling out support, celebrating every move, and reminding her she could do it—was pretty special.

To me Green Light Go is an enriching part of my life that has opened up numerous pathways for me to get involved in the community in a meaningful way. GLGO has been a way for me to branch out and make great connections with kids and mentors alike and I am so glad to be a part of the work done at Green Light Go!

I started as a mentor a few months ago and I have already witnessed first hand how much of a positive impact this program has had on its students. Watching them smile and have fun during group activities, while also being confident and vulnerable when talking about their emotions is a really rewarding experience because it shows how much growth they’ve had over these past few months. My favorite part about being a mentor is serving as a safe space and a friend, who the kids feel comfortable talking to.

🎉 𝐇𝐞𝐲, 𝐰𝐞’𝐫𝐞 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠! 𝐖𝐞𝐥𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐦, 𝐑𝐮𝐛𝐲!

We’re thrilled to share that Ruby has joined Green Light GO as our new Associate Program Coordinator!

A graduate of Sacramento State with a Bachelors of Science in Psycology, 𝐑𝐮𝐛𝐲 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐚 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐋𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐆𝐎 𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐭𝐰𝐨 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬. During that time, we’ve been continually impressed by her composure, dedication, wide-ranging skills, and natural ability to connect with and support our students.

Now she’s bringing all of those talents to our staff—and she’s already off to a very strong start working with our students in the San Juan Unified School District!
