Today, we celebrate Juneteenth—a powerful reminder of the triumph of freedom, the resilience of our ancestors, and the ongoing work required to build a more just and equitable society.
On June 19, 1865, enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, finally learned of their freedom, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation had been issued. Their story reminds us that progress often requires perseverance, courage, and collective action.
As we honor this historic day, the National Action Network Sacramento Chapter renews our commitment to advancing Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s vision of justice, equality, and beloved community. Let us celebrate how far we have come while continuing the work that lies ahead.
“Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed.” — Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
