Your action is needed NOW to fully fund the charter school facility grant program!

The Charter School Facility Grant Program (CSFG) helps eligible serving low-income students pay for the facilities.

The program has been oversubscribed every year since 2020—meaning schools already receive less than they are owed—and the governor's May Revision cuts the program even further.

Here are two things you can do to ensure charter students have access to safe, functional learning environments:

1️⃣ Take two minutes to ask your State Senator, Assemblymember, and the Governor to fully fund the program. Our advocacy tool helps you quickly identify your elected reps and features draft language to make this quick! https://www.chartercenter.org/fund-sb740

2️⃣ Share this post! Encourage your network to speak out against the proposed cuts and to take action above.

It was supposed to be a routine budget item.

But the governor's modest proposals to increase funding for the Charter School Facility Grant Program faced hostile scrutiny before an Assembly budget subcommittee this past week—something California leaders should watch closely.

CSDC's Laura Kerr has the latest in this week's installment of the CSDC Legislative Update, which CSDC publishes frequently during pivotal moments in the state's annual policymaking cycle.

April is for Advocacy! This month, California showed up in Sacramento to advocate on two critical topics:

1️⃣ Preserving Access to CalSTRS

AB 1997, a 2024 law, unintentionally puts CalSTRS eligibility at risk for charter school administrators, counselors, librarians, and other non-teaching staff.

AB 2519 (McKinnor) restores fair, clear CalSTRS eligibility for charter school educators and has the support of CalSTRS itself.

Thanks to your advocacy this week, CSDC is pleased to report that AB 2519 has passed the Assembly Committee on Public Employment and Retirement on a unanimous vote.

Learn more about AB 2519 by downloading CSDC’s 1-page fact sheet:

And a huge thanks to Springs Charter Schools, CORE BUTTE INC, Kairos Public Schools, Sage Oak Charter Schools, California Pacific Charter Schools, California Montessori Project, and Natomas Charter School for sending representatives to testify!

2️⃣ Fighting for the Community Schools Grant

The governor's proposed $1 billion expansion of the California Community Schools Partnership Program (CCSPP) contains a glaring inconsistency—and CSDC Member schools are calling it out.

Last week, charter school leaders from SIATech, HomeTech Charter School, and Gateway Community Charters testified before the Assembly Budget Subcommittee No. 3 on Education Finance opposing that categorical exclusion.

📣Protect educators’ access to CALSTRS!
⏳Take action before April 22 hearing!

Some charter school educators are at risk of losing access to CalSTRS—and we need your help to stop it.

AB 1997, a 2024 law that slipped through without charter school input, would take effect July 1, 2027 and restrict CalSTRS eligibility for charter school administrators, counselors, librarians, and other non-teaching staff. It would also force teachers in leadership roles to choose between a promotion and their pension. That is not a choice any educator should have to make.

The good news: we have time to fix this. AB 2519 (McKinnor) restores fair, clear CalSTRS eligibility for charter school educators and has the support of CalSTRS itself.

The Assembly Committee on Public Employment and Retirement hears this bill on Wednesday, April 22. Here’s how you can make a difference:

1️⃣ Your Assemblymember needs to hear from you BEFORE next week's hearing on April 22. Click below to send a message to your Assemblymember and urge their support of AB 2519. It takes 30 seconds—and it makes a difference.

3️⃣ If you’re near Sacramento, join us for the Assembly Public Employment & Retirement Committee Hearing at 9:00AM on Wednesday, April 22 at the State Capitol. RSVP by emailing CSDC's Legislative & Community Outreach Specialist, Laura Kerr, at [email protected].
