Five Sacramento chefs are stepping up to support food literacy education:

We’re halfway through Food Literacy Month!

Your support helps students in low-income schools develop the cooking and nutrition skills they need to build healthy futures. 🥦👩‍🍳

Learning to eat well isn’t instinctive—it takes education. From our hands-on cooking classes to our take-home recipe kits, families tell us these programs matter. They are eating healthier and cooking the vegetables we send home because their children have participated in our hands-on classes and fallen in love with healthy eating.

But we’re not at the finish line yet! Help us reach our goal by September 30.

🥦Thank you to Vice Mayor Talamantes and the Sacramento City Council for tonight’s resolution celebrating Food Literacy Month!

We began this work in 2012, partnering with the California Legislature to declare September as and raise awareness about the importance of inspiring kids to eat their vegetables.
This recognition comes at a critical moment.

🚨Hunger in our community is currently three times greater than it was during the pandemic, and too many students and families are struggling to access the healthy food they need.

🥦This Food Literacy Month resolution recognizes the importance of food and nutrition education as we respond to the current food crisis. By teaching children how to cook and make healthy food choices, we’re building habits that can protect their health for life.
Thank you to the Sacramento City Council for recognizing Food Literacy Month and standing with us. Lettuce keep inspiring kids to eat their vegetables.

Only three days left to vote for your favorite veggie! 🥕🥦🌽

This year, the five vegetables with the most votes will each be assigned to a participating chef, who will be challenged to create a delicious pizza featuring their veggie as the star of the show!🍕

The judges? Our veggie-loving Food Literacy Center students! They’ll taste each pizza and decide which veggie will take the crown. 👑

🥦 September is officially Food Literacy Month in California!

Food Literacy Month is a feel-good way to support our mission to inspire kids to eat their vegetables.🌽👩‍🌾

Here’s how it works:
🥬Vote for your favorite veggie! Hurry, the poll closes September 7!
👨‍🍳 The five vegetables with the most votes will be assigned to a participating chef. Each chef will then create a veggie pizza featuring their assigned vegetable as the star ingredient for our students to taste and judge!

We had a blast bringing our Summer Kids Farmers Markets to Bell Avenue and Robla elementary schools! 🥕🫐🥒

Students cheerfully went home with cucumbers, blueberries, celery, onions, carrots, and much more.

Because of our community’s support, we provided 4,186 pounds of fruits and vegetables to 161 students!

Our Kids Farmers Markets are the culmination of our 10-week afterschool program. We plan these events before school breaks to ensure that kids experiencing food and nutrition insecurity go home with fresh fruits and vegetables, helping to support their health and well-being while school is out of session.

Thank you Dignity Health Sacramento, ’s Expanded Learning staff, volunteers, and everyone who participated and helped make these markets possible! 🙌

🥦For the past five years, Food Literacy Center has been inspiring kids to eat their vegetables from our headquarters located in Upper Land Park!

🍎During that time, we’ve provided daytime cooking and gardening classes for students from Leataata Floyd Elementary School, hosted field trips serving students from three school districts, and welcomed the community for events that support our free programs for kids.

☀️Our urban farm also serves as a gathering space where we host family-friendly events and activities for neighbors like you.
