CAIR-CA today welcomed the federal government’s decision to move to dismiss the criminal case against and President David Huerta and emphasized that advocates should never be prosecuted for Constitutionally protected activity defending immigrant communities.

Huerta was arrested in June 2025 while protesting a workplace raid by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). After questioning the ICE agents’ actions during the operation, Huerta was tackled, pepper sprayed, and detained before being charged with obstructing federal officers.

AB 715 is now law, but the fight over classroom censorship in California is not over.

California lawmakers had a chance to fix some of the law’s most serious problems. Instead, AB 2159 was blocked from moving forward, and AB 2615—the so-called “clean-up” bill—still does not go far enough.

That matters because students deserve classrooms where they can learn honestly, think critically, and talk about Palestine without fear of censorship or punishment.

AB 2615 is still in the Assembly, and lawmakers need to hear from our communities now.

From extremists spreading vitriol and hate online, to elected officials writing anti-Muslim bigotry into public policy, Islamophobia has become ingrained in our country’s societal, educational, and political landscapes. Anti-Muslim hate isn't new—but why is it suddenly everywhere?

Islamophobic rhetoric and policies are often fueled and funded by special interest groups, dubbed the Islamophobia Network, that work with one another to negatively influence public opinion and government policy about Muslims and Islam in the U.S. The same strategy is being used in California, including by Julie Marzouk, one of the local leaders of anti-Muslim bigotry.
