Portugal is home to hundreds of ancient trees estimated to be over 2,000 years old, with olive trees among the most remarkable examples of the country’s natural heritage. A tree known as 'Oliveira do Mouchão', found in the municipality of Abrantes, is thought to be the oldest in the country at 3,350 years old.

Researchers at the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro (UTAD) have developed scientific methods to estimate and certify the age of Portugal’s oldest olive trees. UTAD researchers have used mathematical models based on measurements of trunk size and growth patterns to estimate their age. Research publicized by the university identified olive trees described as being older than the time of Christ.

Some of Portugal’s most celebrated millennial olive trees are found in the Algarve, Alentejo and other regions with long traditions of olive cultivation. Despite their remarkable age, some continue to produce olives, connecting modern Portuguese agriculture with antiquity.
