State of California Employment Development Department’s Disability Insurance Elective Coverage (DIEC) provides eligible individuals with an optional financial safety net when they may not otherwise pay into State Disability Insurance (SDI).

DIEC may provide benefits for:
• Disability due to illness, injury, or pregnancy
• Paid Family Leave to care for a seriously ill family member
• Bonding with a new child
• Qualifying military-related events

If you are self-employed, own a business, or work as an independent contractor, we encourage you to learn about the program and determine whether you may be eligible.

October is here, bringing many opportunities to raise awareness, celebrate our diverse communities, and support one another. Throughout the month, we recognize Depression Awareness Month, Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, LGBTQ+ History Month, Filipino American History Month, Hispanic Heritage Month, and Cybersecurity Awareness Month.
