The very idea that the state might step in to mange discussions between the Sacramento County Office of Education (SCOE) and SCUSD has the Bee editorial board in a tizzy as usual. It appears that the deal the district made with SCTA could be brought forward again in the future.

State Superintendent Tony Thurmond endorsed the recently struck down deal and threatened to intervene over the county office's authority.

The county has rejected the district's agreement with SCTA. I think David Gordon would look on SCUSD going into state receivership as his greatest accomplishment.

The county’s fiscal adviser reversed the board’s approval less than a day after trustees backed the agreement.

Sadly, other cost cutting measures will include the cancellation of the 6th grade science field trip. When my kids were in school, this was a big focus of the school year, including lots of student fundraising.

Board members unveiled an updated plan to stay afloat and avoid state intervention during a special meeting Thursday evening.

The County Board of Ed voted to renew the Highlands Charter that Twin Rivers had revoked. They actually faulted Twin Rivers for a lack of oversight. That oversight costs a district money, and charters contribute only a small fraction of it. Meanwhile every charter school takes money away from district students.

Highlands got a second chance after a state audit found several infractions and school board members moved to shut the schools down.
