Thank you SFGATE for this great story about rare butterflies adorning Visit Santa Cruz. Happy to share this wonderful news about colorful California wildlife.

A thick blanket of orange-and-brown butterflies swept into Santa Cruz in May, delighting residents across the region.

Locals can’t seem to stop posting about the unexpected influx, sharing photos and reaching for increasingly glowing descriptions as the butterflies spill across trails, gardens and roadsides.

“It almost feels like the landscape is healing,” Shannon Robbins, a landscape designer who has lived in Bonny Doon for two decades, told SFGATE.

Butterflies belong to the class Insecta and make up a massive group within the insect order called Lepidoptera, which translates to "scaled wings."

California Watchable Wildlife stands with conservationists around the world to protect wildlife from acts of human violence and intervention. Visitors to La Jolla Cove in San Diego are equally dangerous to marine life and, yet, local authorities do nothing to protect the sea lions.
