California State Information Officers Council We have grown from only a few Public Information Officers sharing over lunch, to an ever-growing professional association.

The State Information Officers Council (SiOC) is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to providing support, education, information, and networking to the public information and communication professionals working for and with the State of California. SiOC Welcomes You
The California State Information Officers Council (SiOC) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing support, education, information, networking, and other opportunities to public information and communications professionals in California. Events
SiOC hosts a range of professional development events each month including presentations, seminars, panel discussions, trainings, and business networking mixers. Training events are immersive, full-day events where members get to go deeper into interesting subjects in modern communications craft. We also hold an annual awards event where we recognize members for exemplary accomplishments in public sector communications. Our midday professional development events include an optional catered lunch with selections attendees can choose from when they RSVP. The full-day events include continental breakfast and lunch, as well. History
SiOC had no official beginning, but a few Public Information Officers joined together and formed a functioning organization around 1970. In its early stages, members met over lunch to share common experiences and professional advice. With implementation of annual dues, revenue accumulated and hiring a treasurer was the start of establishing a staff. As the guest speakers increasingly attended monthly meetings, interest in membership grew. Soon, the private dining room at a neighborhood restaurant was too small for meetings. SiOC also grew in recognition after joining the National Association of Government Communicators (NAGC). However, over the years, politics put the position of Public Information Officer into question. But the group knew their positions served a vital purpose: to protect the public’s right to know. More than ever, it was clear that SiOC was a necessary organization.
