The University of California Student Association (UCSA) is a coalition of UC students and student governments aimed at increasing the accessibility, affordability and quality of the UC system through advocacy and direct action organizing. UCSA is a student-run, membership-based organization, with a Board of Directors made up entirely of students and a full-time staff led by an Executive Director.

Last week, our Student Advocate to the Regents (StAR), Rogelio, made public comment urging the UC to invest in paid fellowship opportunities for low-income & undocumented student communities across our campuses. 📣

The opportunity to work and get paid for professional opportunities is fundamental to students as they pursue a college degree and prepare for the workforce. Funding for critical programs like the Presidential Experiential Learning Fellowship is essential, especially amid Governor Newsom’s shameful veto of our co-sponsored legislation AB 713, the Opportunity for All Act. 🚨

We urge the UC Regents, Office of the President and campus Chancellors: FUND paid opportunities for ALL students and ensure we can work in order to afford attending the UC that prides itself on our diversity.

Our Student Advocate to the Regents (StAR) for the September Regents meeting at UCLA this week, Zooey Lê-Baker, spoke on the inconsistent enforcement our our 2025 bill, SB 98 (the SAFE Act) which was passed last year on an urgency clause to mandate colleges notify students of ICE presence. 🚨

From Berkeley to LA and San Diego, UC students deserve to feel safe while we are on campus, yet the UC’s complacency in implementing a systemwide policy to ensure notifications of immigration activity are timely and sent to all campus community members has been lackluster. Despite campuses being provided guidance on SB 98 compliance, notifications vary by UC campus and in some instances, notifications haven’t been sent out at all. 🚫📲

UCSA urges the Regents and UCOP to step in on campus notification systems, and double down on protecting our ***most vulnerable students*** from the atrocities being waged by the violent federal crackdown on immigration enforcement, which has resulted in the HIGHEST number of murders they have committed since their inception in 2003. We will not back down until students feel SAFE and the initial intent of the bill is adopted by all UC campuses.

Yesterday, our University Affairs Vice Chair, Cecilia Choy, urged the UC Board of Regents to reverse ’s decision to CLOSE the campus childcare center next June, a devastating move that puts hundreds of our Bruin families—students, staff and faculty—in a difficult position to choose between their education or work, and their dependents. 🗣️ Save UCLA Childcare

UCSA strongly condemns this course of action, especially in its contrast to the UC’s mission as a public serving research university. Not only does the UCLA Childcare Center allow students and employees with resources to support their family, ensuring they can study and work, but it also offers Child Development majors with hands-on practical skills working with kids. 🧑‍🍼🤲🚼

While the Regents meet at the UCLA campus, we hope they understand the irony of governing UC budget decisions and authorizing tuition increases, while our essential student services like childcare are stripped right from our hands.

Today, our University Affairs Chair Zaynab made public comment to the UC Regents during their meeting at UCLA, opposing the reinstatement of the SAT/ACT standardized testing as admissions requirements. 🗣️📊🚫

Access to the premiere public research university, the UC, must be rooted in data and center student success, not a test that measures wealth over college readiness.

UCSA urges the Regents to shut down any consideration of bringing back the SAT on future generations of UC students and instead explore critical reforms like closing basic needs insecurity gaps that dramatically impact student persistence yet continue facing tens of thousands of our peers.

This weekend, our 2026-27 Board of Directors hosted our September meeting at the beautiful . 🐎🌳🏆 Shoutout to our Exec team and campus delegations for a wonderful, community-oriented weekend.

Thank you ASUCD External Affairs Vice President Simrit Singh for hosting us, UC Basic Needs for presenting on college student essential needs data, and our International Student Affairs Officer for an update on visa barriers facing thousands of UC students. We heard an update on our 2026 Legislative priorities, received a visit from UCOP on system policies, & toured incredible student-initiated programs supporting hundreds of underrepresented UC Davis students. Policy Fellowship Application is Now OPEN!!

The UCSA Policy Fellowship is a year-long fellowship where you will gain hands-on experience with the legislative process. Fellowship includes training in fall, research and lobbying prep in winter, drafting a bill proposal to legislators and advocacy in spring. Plus, you will gain valuable mentorship from UCSA’s Government Relations team and various legislators and their staffers. (Applicants must be a current UC undergraduate student)

But there is still time to fight back: join UC students, faculty, unions, and alumni next week to learn what we can do to protect higher education. We’ll hear from Jonathan D. Glater, Professor of Law and Associate Dean at UC Berkeley, to learn what’s at stake and to prepare comments to submit to the Department of Education that push back against Trump’s attempt to exert political control over universities.
