They have already lived through the worst day of their lives. They should not have to keep reliving it.

This week, victims’ families stood before cameras and shared losses no words can fully capture. Their courage is why we showed up. Their rights are why we are taking action.

PORAC has joined CJLF’s lawsuit challenging new state regulations that create a pathway toward reduced sentences for the state's most violent criminals, including those serving life without parole.

For the loved ones they lost. For the families still carrying that loss. PORAC stands with you.

Changing life-without-parole sentences through regulation could set a precedent far beyond one category of cases. The impact could reach victims, families, officers and public safety.

Proposition 115 established important protections involving special-circumstance murder convictions. Now, critics say those voter-approved decisions could be undermined without another vote.

PORAC mourns the loss of California Highway Patrol Officer Brian Liles, who was killed in an on-duty motorcycle crash in Tulare County on September 28.

A husband, father of two and dedicated officer with more than 16 years of service, Officer Liles devoted his career to protecting California’s communities.

Our hearts are with his wife, children, loved ones and the entire CHP family. We honor his service and stand with all who are grieving his loss

Victims have a constitutional right to be heard. But if new “second look” hearings move forward, will families be notified—and will they still have the opportunity to speak?

09/25/2026

Under the new regulations, some people serving life without parole could become eligible for a “second look” after 25 years. Critics argue the parole board does not have the authority to create that pathway.
