Inspiration

The Eastern tribes of Israel found their Promised Land upon God's promise, but they were not asked to simply settle there an await its followers to come flooding in comfort and safety. What was asked, instead, was to extend his word beyond. This kind of work is demanding and not easy, but it is our duty. Seek out your brothers and sisters to share in his grace and message of salvation, do not be complacent in comfort that once one has already found Christ, there is nothing left to be done.

Prayer

Christ my savior and light, I thank you daily for your sacrifice. Give me the courage and strength to move with you, unto the world of man and to spread the word of the Heavenly father. Let me not stand still in Your Word Lord, growing complacent and silent, but rather let me sing loudly your psalms, and trudge fearlessly holding your flame of truth and glory; illuminating your grace upon the face of all men and women. Amen.

Some of the Jews of Jesus' day thought they had good reasons for rejecting Him. They thought they knew he was from Nazareth and the mere natural son of Mary and Joseph. The Bible prophesied the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem of Judah, and though Jesus had been, they did not know it. He came from the Father, but they truly in that regard "did not know from where he came. "

Prayer

We know, O Lord, that many men will find some excuse to not believe in you. We know that Satan blinds the minds of those who believe not. And we know that you reveal yourself to your people. Help us to reason from the Scriptures and seek to convince men of your Gospel, but let us not trust in our ability to argue well but in your Spirit revealing Christ to men's hearts and minds. Amen.

To whom does Jesus give “rest?” To those who are burdened down with their load of sin and who, however much they may labor to keep God’s Law, cannot do so. Jesus gives rest to the sinful soul, even the most vile of all men, if only it rests in Him.

Prayer

We know, Lord, You have said that there is no peace for the wicked (Isaiah 48:22). And what is peace but rest to our souls? But those who cease from their own works and rest in You find true peace. You bid us be busy at work, Lord, but in the midst of activity for Your glory, You bid our hearts rest at peace on the merits of Your Son. Amen.

It is hard to imagine how our Jesus, holy and perfect in every way, came to live on earth amongst men. In our world full of sin and everything that opposes the light, he was birthed as a baby and lived his life among men. He became man so that he may take on man’s sin on the cross. Without living as man, Jesus would not have been able to reconcile mankind to our Lord. And, Jesus did it all knowing he would have to suffer for us. It is amazing love.

Prayer

Dear God, thank you for sending your son, Jesus Christ, to live as a man on earth so that he may die for our sins. We know we do not deserve this atonement and it is only because of your mercy and grace that we have been liberated from sin and reconciled to you, O Lord. You are holy and precious to us. Help us to tell others about your good news. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Here and in verse 16 just before, we see God giving Israel over to the rule of a careless shepherd (king). This shepherd would do them harm and not good. They had rejected Jehovah-God as their Shepherd-king, and now they were given another shepherd whom they would chafe under.

Prayer

O Jehovah my Shepherd, You are the Good Shepherd whoever cares for His sheep. Help me to follow and trust You not only in the green pastures but also through the valley of the shadow of death. No other shepherd can compare to You, Lord, and we Your sheep flee from the voice of strangers, for we know only the voice of our true Shepherd. Amen.

We know that God saved us from the power of darkness through his son’s death and resurrection. We have been delivered from Satan’s clutches. But, we have not simply been delivered, we have been invited into his son’s kingdom. We have been invited in to a place we do not deserve. It’s like offering a beggar from the street a seat at the head of the table. We not only are free from sin on earth, we get to celebrate alongside our King in Heaven for eternity.

Prayer

Dear God, this world is full of darkness. I know Satan is real, but I know you have defeated him. He has no power over me because I am a child of God. When I am facing the darkness, send your spirit to guide me and protect me. Thank you for your son, Jesus Christ, who delivered me from the power of sin and darkness. I rejoice in my deliverance and my welcome into your kingdom. In Jesus’ name, amen.

God is utterly righteous. He loves righteousness and hates iniquity. His face shines approvingly on those who walk uprightly, but he is angry with the wicked every day. (Psalm 7:11) It is impossible to please God while being unrighteous, both as to outward conduct and the character of one’s soul.

Prayer

O Righteous Father, all of Your decisions and all of Your actions are just. You, Lord, love righteousness and demand it in us. But we are unrighteous by birth; we were conceived and born fallen creatures. We are Your children, wearing the righteousness of Your Son. Help us to live righteously before You and do those things that please You. Amen.

How do you wake up in the morning? Do you arise thanking the Lord for a new day to experience his blessings? As believers, we should be filled with gladness when we recognize God’s mercy. This is a feeling that we should rejoice in day after day. We must not grow complacent to God’s unfailing love. When we rise, we should honor the Lord with our rejoicing.

Prayer

Dear God, help me to be reminded of your goodness with each sunset and sunrise. These are your creations, O Lord. Your mercy is beyond what I deserve – thank you, Lord. Your steadfast love and faithfulness cause me to rejoice and fill me with gladness. May I live this day with a glad heart so that others may be drawn to you. In Jesus’ name, amen.

The hope of the righteous man will be fulfilled, and he will rejoice. But the wicked’s hope shall be cut off forever. Those whose hope is in the Lord shall not be disappointed, but hopes founded on our own will or desires apart from the Lord’s will, cannot ultimately endure.

Prayer

O Lord, my hope is in You alone. Let all of my hopes be founded upon Your promises and on Your clear leadings in my life. If you put a good desire in my heart to serve You in a particular way, may that hope not perish if it is truly found to be will. But let me not make the transient treasures and pleasures of this life my hope. Amen.

When we ponder all the things God has done and created, we are left standing in awe. We simply cannot comprehend his ways. This is because God’s ways are not like our ways. Humans are not capable of speaking and making the storms cease, but God is capable and he has done so. It’s amazing that with his voice he spoke darkness into light.

Prayer

Dear God, your works are marvelous. The power you have is unfathomable. You are amazing and we stand in awe. O Lord, we know one day every knee will bow before you for you are the creator of Heaven and Earth. Your voice alone has the power to speak life. When I begin to place my trust in anyone or anything before you, help me to remember who you are and what you can do. In Jesus’ name, amen.
