Changemaker Spotlight

Sometimes, advancing health equity begins with a simple belief: when families are stronger, communities are stronger.

For Obinna O. Oleribe, that belief has shaped a remarkable journey across medicine, academia, advocacy, community service — and continents.

A physician turned academician, Obinna O. Oleribe now serves as an Assistant Professor of Health Management at California State University, Dominguez Hills and as Chief Operating Officer and Board Secretary of the Center for Family Health Initiative (CFHI).

After relocating to California, he joined the Black Health Network to connect with organizations equally committed to advancing the health and well-being of African American families.

His work puts that commitment into action.

In the classroom, he is helping prepare the next generation of public health leaders to understand health equity and bring those lessons back to their families and communities.

But his commitment to service began long before California.

As a young medical student, witnessing the circumstances of a vulnerable child changed the trajectory of his career and sparked a lifelong commitment to advocacy. Years later, at age 50, he made another life-changing decision: leaving behind his businesses, investments, and professional standing in Nigeria to start over in the United States so his daughter could pursue her dreams.

His journey since has required sacrifice, humility, resilience, and a willingness to serve wherever he was needed.

For him, that is what courage looks like.

“Bravery often looks like humility, sacrifice, and choosing compassion in moments when it would be easier to look away.”

And the belief that carries him forward?

“Nothing is impossible to the person who believes.”

For 40 years, CBHN has been strengthened by people who believe healthier futures are possible — and who are willing to teach, advocate, serve, build, sacrifice, and act to help make them real.

Because health equity isn’t achieved by one organization or one person. It is built through a network of changemakers committed to strengthening families and transforming communities.

This week we celebrate Black Breastfeeding Week by recognizing the strength, resilience, and leadership of Black mothers, families, doulas, lactation consultants, and community advocates.

In honor of 10th anniversary of this milestone, we are celebrating by screening a film and giving away a gift.

Changemaker Spotlight

Change requires more than recognizing that inequities exist. Sometimes, it means getting in the room — and using your voice when you get there.

ForKimberly Pierce , advocacy became personal while helping family members navigate their own health challenges. What she experienced opened her eyes to the barriers too many Black families encounter when seeking fair, ethical, affordable, and trustworthy care.

It also strengthened her resolve to do something about it.

A Senior Analyst Account Executive in healthcare, community leader, board member, and member of the Coalition of 100 Black Women Los Angeles Chapter, she joined the Black Health Network in 2025 to deepen her understanding of the policies, legislation, and government processes affecting Black and Brown communities — and become even more intentional in her advocacy.

Today, she prioritizes Black health by creating space for uncomfortable conversations, sharing facts and information, and getting in the room with people who have the power to drive change.

And when she gets there, she speaks.

When asked about the bravest thing she has ever done, her answer was powerful:

“Use my voice constructively and respectfully, without allowing the limitations, mediocrity, or power of others to diminish it.”

That is the kind of courage that moves communities forward.

For 40 years, CBHN has brought together people willing to learn, advocate, speak up, challenge systems, and use their influence to help create better health outcomes for Black Californians.

Because our voices have value. Our experiences have value. And when we bring them into the places where decisions are made, they have the power to create change.

Happening TODAY!!

OneLegacy has partnered with Donate Life California and Maitri Film Productions to host a very special film screening in Los Angeles on Thursday, August 20, 2026, at Cinemark Baldwin Hills, in celebration of Multicultural Donor Awareness Month. The film screening will be Abundant, a documentary film that follows the unbelievable events that occurred when a cast of kidney donors came together to create a live staged storytelling show.

The film screening will be followed by a special inter-faith panel to discuss the importance of organ, eye, and tissue donation, and dispel myths about organ donation and religious beliefs. Most major religions in the world approve organ donation, considering it as an act of goodness, and a way to help other people.

The film, snacks, and drinks are free.

August is also Multicultural Donor Awareness Month, a special celebration to save and improve the quality of life of diverse communities by creating a positive culture for organ, eye, and tissue donation.

The goal of this observance is to increase awareness of the importance of donation and transplantation in multicultural communities – focusing primarily on African American, Hispanic, Asian/Pacific Islander, and Native American communities.

Changemaker Spotlight.

What if storytelling could be part of how we heal? For Constance Strickland, art is more than creative expression. It is a way to center the emotional lives, mental health, and well-being of Black women — and to imagine a healthier future for the generations coming behind us.

An interdisciplinary theatre and performance artist and Visual Director of Theatre Roscius, she has committed more than a decade to creating work that places the Black body, Black women’s experiences, and Black well-being at the center of the story.

Her connection to CBHN began during COVID-19, first as a follower, supporter, and believer in the work — and, for the past two years, as a member of the Black Health Network.

Her vision for health equity challenges us to think bigger: to build our own infrastructure, invest in one another, take risks, and create systems that truly serve our communities.

And what keeps her creating?

“Knowing a little Black girl in the future will find the work, and it will be of use to her in ways I could never imagine.”

That is impact.

It’s planting something today that someone else may need tomorrow. It’s having the courage to tell our stories, center our experiences, and remain boldly and authentically ourselves.

For 40 years, CBHN’s story has been shaped by changemakers who understand that advancing Black health takes all of us — advocates, healthcare professionals, community leaders, researchers, artists, storytellers, and visionaries.
