Chako is run by volunteers - and we'd like to give a shout out to Suzi and Jim who volunteered on MOTHER'S DAY to respond to a call that came in about two possibly abandoned dogs. They went to check on the dogs that had been left for hours in a crate near the side of a road. Turns out, the dogs were owned by a man living in his truck, and he'd gone to the store. He said he didn't realize he'd been gone for so long, but our volunteers provided food, water, and supplies. Animal Control also came out, checked on the dogs, and spoke to the gentleman. Thank you, Suzi and Jim!

This is a sad case and hard to watch, even though the news clip cuts off before showing anything graphic. We're completely bewildered by the officer's actions--entering a private backyard without apparent probable cause, even after seeing a dog free roaming in the backyard, still choosing to enter. We don't recommend leaving most dogs unattended in back yards, of course, but owners have every legal right to do so. The officer, on the other hand, does not have a legal right to enter private property absent narrow exceptions, none of which seem to apply here (such as exigent circumstances--hot pursuit, emergency aid, etc.)

Dogs are smarter than most people think!

A group of “gifted word learner” dogs can learn new words that label objects by overhearing their owners talking with each other, according to a new study in Science.

These dogs can map a new word to a new object even when the word and object are not presented simultaneously. Together, these abilities put these special dogs at the same word-learning level as 18 to 23-month-old children.
