Alopecia is an autoimmune disease that is not life-threatening but is life-altering. You can't catch it and it does not hurt. It is almost like your body is allergic to hair, which causes it to fall out. If you are in need of Alopecia advice and coaching, contact our CAP Kid Family Advocate, Deeann Graham at [email protected]

The Children's Alopecia Project (CAP) was founded in 2014 by Jeff and Betsy Woytovich in Pennsylvania. CAP's mission is to build self-esteem, bring support to children with alopecia, and raise alopecia awareness. CAP also provides a global networking opportunity and is an invaluable resource.
===================================
Alopecia Areata, a condition that causes round patches of hair loss and can lead to total hair loss, is an autoimmune disease affecting millions of Americans. It is not contagious, and people who have the disease are generally healthy otherwise. The cause of alopecia areata is unknown and there is no cure. Forms of alopecia include:
Alopecia areata -- patches of hair loss, usually on the scalp, but they also can be in the beard or other areas
Alopecia totalis -- complete loss of scalp hair
Alopecia Universalis -- total loss of all body hair
Diffuse Alopecia Areata -- alopecia areata without the typical round patches
Effects of alopecia areata are mainly psychological (loss of self-image due to hair loss).
