With Juneteenth fast approaching, we are reminded that freedom is not just a moment in history—it is a responsibility that must be protected and expanded for every generation.

The right to vote remains one of the most powerful tools for creating change, holding leaders accountable, and shaping the future of our communities.

As we honor Juneteenth, we also honor the generations of advocates who fought to secure and protect voting rights. Their courage and perseverance paved the way for greater participation in our democracy and continue to inspire us today.

As the NAACP California Hawaiʻi State Conference, we remain committed to advancing equity, protecting voting rights, and empowering communities through civic engagement. As we celebrate freedom, we recommit ourselves to ensuring every voice is heard and every vote counts.

Freedom and civic participation go hand in hand.

Today, on Women Veterans Day, the NAACP California Hawaiʻi State Conference proudly honors the courage, sacrifice, and service of the women who have answered the call to serve our nation.

Women veterans have broken barriers, led with distinction, and continue to make invaluable contributions to their communities long after their military service ends. Their strength, resilience, and leadership inspire us all.

We also recognize and thank the members of our Veterans Affairs Committees and branch leaders across California and Hawaiʻi who work tirelessly to advocate for veterans, connect them with critical resources, and ensure their voices are heard. Your dedication helps advance equity, opportunity, and support for those who have served.

Let's celebrate the remarkable women veterans who have defended our nation and the advocates who continue to champion their well-being and success.

Did you know?

Juneteenth, short for “June Nineteenth,” marks the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, in 1865 to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people be freed. The troops’ arrival came a full two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation.

Juneteenth honors the end to slavery in the United States and is considered the longest-running African American holiday. A federal holiday since 2021.

🧡 National Gun Violence Awareness Day 🧡

Today, June 5 we and we honor the lives lost to gun violence, stand with survivors, and recommit ourselves to building safer communities for all.

The color orange cannot be ignored, just like America’s gun violence crisis.

On National Gun Violence Awareness Day, throw on something BRIGHT and with us. Together, we’ll shine light on an epidemic that takes nearly 130 lives—and shatters countless more—every day.

Tonight’s NAACP CA/HI San Diego happy hour at Bivouac Ciderworks was a great reminder that the strength of the NAACP lies not only in its historic legacy, but in the dedicated volunteers and leaders who continue that work every day.

It was an evening of community, open dialogue, and meaningful conversations among San Diego NAACP Executive Committee members, alongside the NAACP CA/HI State Conference President. These moments of connection matter. They help us learn from one another, strengthen relationships, and recommit ourselves to the mission we all share.

We are one NAACP, and it is up to each of us to uphold, honor, and advance the legacy entrusted to us.
