CACJ has submitted a letter supporting the continued funding of the San Francisco Pretrial Diversion Project.

For decades, community-based pretrial services have helped individuals navigate the justice system while maintaining access to housing, employment, treatment, and family support.

We believe pretrial services should promote success, support compliance, and respect the presumption of innocence.

The California State Assembly approved AB 1917 authored by Assemblymember Schultz.

The legislation requires a prosecutor to file a motion if the prosecutor wants to reinstate a charge that had been dismissed by a judge at preliminary hearing. Under current law a prosecutor may reinstate an offense without a motion or justification.

AB 1917 is co-sponsored by the Office of the San Francisco Public Defenders, CACJ, and the Californians for Safety and Justice. The legislation will be heard in June in the Senate Public Safety Committee.

CACJ was at the State of the Judiciary.

Vice President Sarah Sanger represented our organization and connected with Judicial Appointments Secretary Luis Cespedes and Chief Justice Patricia Guerrero.

This year’s address highlighted urgent issues we see every day in our work:
✔ Access to justice
✔ The need for more judges and resources
✔ The real impact of fear and barriers at our courthouses

Chief Justice Guerrero underscored that courts must remain open, fair, and accessible to all, without fear or interference.

We couldn’t agree more.

CACJ will continue advocating for a justice system that lives up to those principles.

CACJ stands in support of San Francisco Public Defender Mano Raju and his office in protecting the right to counsel.

Judicial interference with the defense function threatens the integrity of our adversary system and the constitutional rights of the people it is meant to serve.

Faulty Urine Tests May Have Inflated Alcohol Levels in California Criminal Cases

A state forensics lab has notified prosecutors that faulty urine test kits used between 2016 and 2025 may have produced artificially elevated alcohol readings in criminal cases, including DUIs.

The issue appears to stem from insufficient preservative in the test kits, which can allow fermentation and increase alcohol levels in certain samples.

Even when the number of affected cases appears small, problems like this highlight why scrutiny of forensic evidence is critical to protecting due process and the integrity of criminal convictions.

Can organizing a protest become evidence of a crime?

In a new article, CACJ Board Member and FORUM Committee Chair Stein explores how conspiracy laws are increasingly being used in protest-related prosecutions and what that could mean for First Amendment protections.

Her piece looks at recent cases and raises important questions about collective action, free speech, and the future of social movements.
