A challenge for some folks looking to add native plants to their home garden is that a lot of cool natives are too big. Except for the Huckleberry which is located in a larger planting area outside the courtyard, here are some natives for small spaces to consider.

This courtyard setting in West Sacramento is mostly shady and has a northern exposure. During spring and summer, about 2/3 of the courtyard will get blasted with sun for about 4 hours or so. Finding plants that could tolerate the "canyon" effect took a while!

We've been up in Tahoe for a few days escaping the valley heat. Thought I'd start the new art book with a nature journaling series.

Would anyone here be interested in guided nature journaling sessions in our native garden here in the cemetery? It's something I've been thinking about for a while. I'm not sure how it flow yet, but if there is interest, I will think about it more.

Our pink flowering currant (Ribes sanguineum) is really happy with the rains we received! You can find it blooming now in the very last plot at the south end of the garden along Riverside Blvd.

This is a great plan for dryer areas under trees. Provide irrigation twice a month in summer for it to look its best.

I've had my eye on this old toyon that grows in an area outside of our native garden. It's a lovely specimen. Today, I found the big branch you see on the left side of this toyon had broken off this past week. So like any good forager, I collected a grocery bag full of the ripe berries. Don't worry, thousands of berries are left for the birds.

I'll try a few different things with both fresh and dried berries. Apparently you can make cider, sauces, jams, and more with the berries.

Dream Time. Artemisia douglasiana/CA Mugwort for Inktober Day 20.

This California native can be found in a skinny plot in the southern end of the demonstration garden. You can also find it locally along the American and Sacramento Rivers. Its range is from Baja up through Washington.

This herb is associated with the goddess Artemis, a fierce protector of womxnfolk. It is used to alleviate many symptoms related to female reproductive health. It is also used to promote lucid dreaming, reduce pain, repel insects, enhance relaxation, and so much more.

It can be used in many forms including teas, smudge sticks, salves, ointments, and baths. An all-around nifty plant with magickal qualities.

Picked up some new plants for the garden for us to plant this fall. The Plant Foundry had a bunch of great stuff, so I got a couple of these gumweeds and three De la Mina verbenas.

Sorry for the garden workday delay. Late October/early November are the likely candidates for our next work party.

See you out soon!
