Submit a proposal to be a featured speaker or workshop facilitator at our 2027 CA Arts & Culture Summit, taking place in Sacramento from April 28 to 30, during Arts, Culture, & Creativity Month (ACCM) 2027!

The theme for ACCM 2027 is "Create to Change: Building Our Civic Power." At a time when unbalanced federal power is calling into question our cultural institutions and the values of equity and justice, we must reaffirm that a thriving arts and culture ecosystem depends on civic engagement, collective advocacy, and communities ready to use their voices to shape the policies, resources, and systems that determine our shared future. We invite arts and cultural workers and cross-sector partners to help lead this conversation.

Next year, CA for the Arts and CA Arts Advocates will celebrate 50 years of combined impact, championing arts and culture as essential to vibrant communities across California. As we enter this milestone year, we are reflecting not only on how far we have come but also on the future we can create together.

Guillermo "Yiyo" Ornelas came to GAAP as a q***r, first-generation Mexican-American performer, teaching artist, and advocate for arts education and cultural equity. They have always been dedicated to ensuring that marginalized voices are not only heard but centered.

Yiyo identified a structural equity failure in Bay Area arts funding: English-only grant applications. They dubbed it the "Submission Gap," the gap between the multilingual outreach San Francisco's arts agencies provide and the English-only process applicants must navigate to get funded. About 30 percent of Bay Area residents are Limited English Proficient; however, few funders accept applications in anything but English. That's an infrastructure failure.

Yiyo built an extensive coalition map across cultural districts and immigrant-serving organizations, drawing on their years of work with Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts and the Arts Education Alliance of the Bay Area . The plan's four-year timeline calls for analyzing existing multilingual grant models, aligning with San Francisco's departments and agencies, and partnering with organizations serving immigrant and newcomer populations. Yiyo’s strategy is to turn a strong equity case into asks that departments and agencies will say yes to.

Happy birthday to the one and only Ted Russell, ! 🎉

As a visionary leader of our Grassroots Artists Advocacy Program (GAAP) and a highly respected figure in the arts community nationwide, we are incredibly grateful to have Ted as part of Team CA for the Arts. With extensive experience in the arts and culture sector, Ted is a seasoned strategist who has dedicated his career to creating opportunities and promoting equity for others.

Here is his story in his own words:

"The first time I was told I wasn't an artist was in second grade, when my teacher said the multi-colored ceramic squirrel I painted was wrong. Years later, a glassblower named Jimmy Dahlia invited me into his shop and taught me how to bend neon.

The first time someone told me I was an artist, everything changed. That experience shaped my life and my work. I advocate for the arts because I believe in holding the door open for artists, creating opportunities for people to realize their creative potential, and making sure every voice has a place at the table. I believe art belongs at every table."
