Union of American Physicians and Dentists

Union of American Physicians and Dentists Strengthening the voices of more than 7,000 licensed doctors and advanced practice clinicians in the workplace. 📣✊

Founded by a private practice physician in 1972, the Union of American Physicians and Dentists has grown into the largest union representing fully-licensed doctors in the United States. UAPD members work in government, the private sector, non-profit clinics, and in private practice. Affiliated with AFSCME and the AFL-CIO, UAPD is proud to bring the strength of labor movement to the aid of working doctors in the interest of better healthcare for all.

The care provided by UC attending physicians should be decided by UC attending physicians. Decisions related to patient care should never be made without physicians in the room.

As physicians across the UC health system come together to organize, the UAPD is building a collective voice to protect what matters most: the quality of care we provide, our ability to advocate for our patients, and the future of our profession. Unionizing gives physicians the power to respond and be heard when problems arise, having a meaningful voice in decisions impacting patient care and working conditions.

Join us for a virtual town hall on Monday, August 24 at 7 PM to learn what organizing could mean for UC attending physicians! Come be part of the conversation about what we can accomplish when we have a voice together.

The fight, the drive, the solidarity ✊ As a union of clinicians, organizing gives us a real voice in the fight for better patient care and a better quality of life for our patients. We're proud to be an AFSCME local, standing together and fighting for every healthcare worker's autonomy 📣

Voting is about advocacy for our clinicians, our patients, and our patients. This campaign has never been about being against Banner. It's been about what primary care can look like when clinicians are able to show up and advocate for their patients without sacrificing their own well-being, and speak up without fear of retaliation.

Every clinician remembers why they chose the path of primary care. For Dr. Elizalde, it was the chance to sit with a patient, listen, connect and guide them through the healthiest and most challenging of times. But now, many clinicians feel that ability slipping out from under them. Buried under inboxes, shrinking time with patients, and decisions made by administration without them in the room.

Ballots are due back soon. If you're a primary care physician or APP at Banner, this is your moment to decide what the future of care looks like.

Burnout shouldn't be part of the job. It's what happens when you lose control over the work you love. Across Banner's primary care clinics, clinicians are standing up to reclaim their professional autonomy -- for their patients and their well-being.

Be sure to mail back your ballots this week! Don't let your vote go uncounted. Vote to reclaim your voice 📣

Unity Health Care laid off more than 60 staff members on the morning of August 11. Some patients learned their appointments were canceled while they were already sitting in the waiting room. This sudden disruption affects over 1,200 patients, with that number expected to grow to 4,000 over the coming year.

For a safety-net provider like Unity, changes like these land hardest on the patients who can least afford a gap in care, including DC residents enrolled in Medicare, Medicaid, or both. Continuity of care isn't a luxury, it's often the difference between managing a chronic condition and a health crisis.

Our members are proud to serve this community and remain fully committed to their patients through these changes. As we move forward, we're hopeful for greater transparency from Unity leadership so that providers can continue delivering the best possible care without disruption.

For nearly three decades, Candace Napier, NP has shown up for her colleagues and her patients. Over that time, she's watched clinicians at Banner Health lose their professional autonomy and their power as individuals to speak up and be heard. Most recently, she was muted mid-sentence during a meeting while raising concerns to management. If a system doesn't value the voices of their clinicians, what level of patient care can patients expect? Voting will allow clinicians to bring an end to the workplace culture that Banner continues to foster.
