BREAKING NEWS ON THE SUSTAINABILITY FRONT!!

Last week, our own Don Reid was successful with a presentation before the American River College Associated Student Body Student Senate to get matching funds for the purchase of compost bins for our campus. They approved $25,000 which will be matched by the ARC Administration giving us a total of $50,000 which will go a long way in helping us to meet AB1383.

This represents the biggest opportunity we have to meet our college's diversion goals!

Thank you to the Senate for their leadership on this front. They have been a strong partner in helping our campus with matching funds on every purchase of our bins! Please be sure to thank them personally if given the opportunity.

Here's some CalRecycle info on why it's so important to divert organics from our landfill waste stream...

* Landfills Are the third largest source of in California.

* 20% of the state’s methane, a climate super pollutant 84 times more potent than carbon dioxide.

* Air pollutants like PM 2.5, which contributes to health conditions like asthma.

* Organics like food scraps, yard trimmings, paper, and cardboard make up half of what Californians dump in landfills.

* Reducing Short-Lived Climate Super Pollutants like organic waste will have the fastest impact on the climate crisis.

For more information on diverting organics...

California is now experiencing the effects of a climate crisis: hotter summers with world record-breaking temperatures, even more devastating fire seasons, more extreme droughts, and rising sea levels that erode our coastlines.

Check out the / / aluminum A-Frame signs that are available through our new Sign Shop out of ARC Printing Services Department!!

We are busy beavers over here in the new sign shop!!

Today, we’re creating new aluminum A-frames signs that are durable, , and most importantly — at the end of their life. We can print white ink over the top of these and then anything else over the top of that a number of times.

Stop by and take a tour of ARC’s new Sign Shop, just south of the Operations Department. We have a lot of new capabilities. 😊

Renewable energy skeptics argue that because of their variability, wind and solar cannot be the foundation of a dependable electricity grid. But the expansion of renewables and new methods of energy management and storage can lead to a grid that is reliable and clean.

City of Sacramento Residents - we need you to give your input using the City's 2040 General Plan Update Virtual Community Questionnaire by Friday, June 5th!

Sacramento City is updating their general plan, including the City’s Climate Action plan. We need Sacramento City residents to fill out this online community questionnaire to make sure everyone’s needs are represented. Participate by June 5 to help the City prioritize key proposed strategies around six general topics which will be part of the 2040 General Plan. You can choose to provide input on all six topics, or just one!

The six general topics presented in this virtual workshop for public input are:
- Livability
- Mobility
- Climate Change
- Environmental Justice
- Economic Development
- Sustainable Growth

Each of these general topics has specific questions for participants and opportunities for additional input. ECOS encourages all of our members and allies to spend approximately 30 minutes responding to this survey opportunity by June 5th, 2020. It is very important that our City government receives robust input and support from progressive, environmentally-conscious citizens.

Available in multiple languages.

Time commitment: approximately 30 minutes
